I'm finding more frequently that after I start an instance (windows server) and use Windows RDP client to connect, it accepts my credentials but doesn't start the windows user session (black screen) and then after about 10 seconds the RDP disconnects.  Seems the only way to solve is to stop and restart the VM.  It seems to happen when I've started a VM and maybe 10 minutes or more goes by before I try to connect to it for the first time since starting it up.  Probably not the issue.

Any insights? Tips?

It kind of looks like an issue connected with your 'remote desktop software'. To push the issue 'towards the corner', please do clarify the following

1. Which version of 'Windows server' OS is running on that instance and when did this issue first occurred?

2. Have you experienced the same issue on a different Windows instance(if you have any)?

3. Have you tried connecting the 'Windows instance' with a different remote desktop software (for example:- Chrome Remote Desktop)?.(if not, try it and check whether the problem still persists there)

1. 2016

2. I use Azure and AWS and sometimes connect to 2012.  Probably about 8 different VMs.  Only GCE I see this issue.

3.  Yes, of course tried Chrome RDP and it didn't work either. Blank scrreen. Stop and restart VM has fixed it every time.  Shouldn't have to do that though.

Maybe it has to do with I never logout of Windows before shutting down the VM.  I'm reaching for reasons there though.

Hi Jeff, another possible issue is that your Windows instance's MTU has been set to a value that is too high. Please see this previous post (found by searching this group for "rdp black screen" - you may find other things to try by searching the group for past RDP posts): https://groups.google.com/d/msg/gce-discussion/4TtyIAelPNs/iQ-CaXHsAgAJ

Hello Jeff,

I have tested RDP (Chrome RDP) on Windows server(both Datacenter and Datacenter Core, Version 2016) with out any issue. Have you checked the discussion link mentioned by Peter?.
