Hey guys

I have been trying to migrate a work to another #gce with #cloudendure, but at the #test stage, I got an error as displayed in the log bellow.

Log

In the above error report, it displays CPU limit of 8.0 while it has already utilized 33.04 as you can see at the image bellow. The image is from the old GCE, while the second is from the new GCE.

On the targeted VM, there is no CPU usage report at all, as you can see in the image bellow.

What CPU limit is it encountering now?

At what end, should I be sure of CPU upgrade?

To what extend should I limit it to?

Why should it report maximum 8.0 while it utilizes 33.04 from the originating server?

Hi UgoChukwu,
Unfortunately your pictures didn't render, so I can't fully understand the issue you are facing.  Quotas are a common issue encountered with people migrating into new projects.  You can check the quotas and ask for increases here: https://pantheon.corp.google.com/compute/quotas

Hey Brian

Thanks for your response. I don't know why the images disappeared from the post. The image is a stat of the CPU usage on the both server. The originating server utilizes 33.04 CPU, while the receiving server has no CPU utilization.

To start with, how much CPU do I really need to execute this migration, so to know what my request will be?

At what end do I need CPU increase? The originating server, or the receiving server?

Hi,

You don't need to increase any CPU either on the source server or the destination server, only the quota for the maximum number of CPUs in the target project, as described in the link provided by Brian.

This is to allow creating the actual target VM.

Hey Brian & Leonid

Now I understand better that my increase need to be done on the targeting server. But my question now is...

How much quota do I need to request?
How much CPU in total do I need, to execute this migration in other not to request for what I will not use or under-estimate?

Now I want to request for quota increase, how much quota should I request, so that I will be sure that it will serve my purpose when the need arises.

Hi,

How many machines are you moving and how many CPUs does each machine have?

Hey Leonid

I have only one machine
n1-standard-1 (1 vCPU, 3.75 GB memory)

Thanks.

In this case, please request to increase the CPUs quota to 20. This should be more than enough for the migration to finish.

Okay

Thank you Leonid. I can now progress to quota request. and from there, to my migration.

Thanks again for your time, and help.

Hi UgoChukwu,
That 33.04 number isn't relevant.  That number is the % utilization on the server.  The number that matters is the total number of CPU cores in the project.  In new projects, Google limits the number of CPU cores.  If you originating server has many cores, you will need to ask for more in the project in order to copy the server over.
