Has anyone installed Asterisk from the pre build ISO that is offered from Asterisk? If so how?  Otherwise have you installed it from scratch?  What problems did you have if any?

Hello Mark,

Please note that running any telecommunications services on Google Cloud Platform such as VoIP isn't permitted as per our Terms of Service (Section 3.3e). As such running this kind of software may cause your project to get suspended.

Customer will not, and will not allow third parties under its control to (e) unless otherwise set forth in the Service Specific Terms, use the Services to operate or enable any telecommunications service or in connection with any Application that allows Customer End Users to place calls or to receive calls from any public switched telephone network;

Thank you for your understanding.

Hello Kamran

How come telecommunications services would not be allowed on GCP, while in fact Google is featuring clients doing exactly that:

https://cloud.google.com/customers/alotech/

Can you please clarify this? Are the Terms of Service not up-to-date?

Thanks

I am moving my systems to Amazon Web Services. Not only do they support it they even have an image for a PBX system all ready to go.

Hi Mark, I'm Jesse. I manage the community support team for GCP. Our prior answer was incomplete, and for that I apologize.

The terms of service do contain the restriction which my colleague mentions, but they also include a disclaimer: "unless otherwise set forth in the Service Specific Terms." In this case the service-specific terms contain a section specific to communications services. As of last update, that section reads:

14.1 Operations of Communications Services. Notwithstanding the telecommunication and call related restrictions in the "Restrictions" section of the Agreement, Customer may use the Services in connection with operating communications services under the conditions of this paragraph. Customer represents that: (a) Customer will use the Services for hosting capacity only; (b) Customer or its Customer End Users will arrange and pay for any communications services used in connection with the Services, including transmission or transport to or from Customer End Users; and (c) Customer will obtain and maintain all necessary regulatory authorizations and approvals relating to any product or service Customer provides using the Services. Any breach of the foregoing representation will be a material breach of the Agreement.

So Kamran's answer was misleading in not including this. GCE cannot connect to the telephone network, but we can certainly host a communications service such as Asterisk.

I am sorry to see you go to AWS, but given the confusion we have caused I completely understand. Within my team I'm going to make sure that we are much more careful when the subject of terms and conditions comes up. My colleagues on the GCE team are investigating how we can clarify the documentation around this topic as well.

Regards,
Jesse
