Just soliciting personal experience, pros/cons for the suggested options.
I'll be running mail-in-a-box for personal use.

Hello Thufir,

You can setup your own Mail-in-a-box and configure it on port 2525 exactly like Sendgrid, Mailgun and Mailjet, as outbound connections on the ports 25,465 and 587 are not allowed on Google Compute Engine.

I was able to find this article that can help you setup Mail-in-a-box on your instance.

I hope this helps.

Sincerely,
George

so if google blocks or throttles port 25 it looks like MiaB won't work for sending mail. (?)
I'm sure sendmail and others allow for configure the outgoing port to 2525, but MiaB doesn't seem to.

Hello Thufir,

If MiaB doesn't allow the smtp port change in it's configuration, and if by any chance you have it running on a corporate mail server you can use a VPN to bypass the ports restrictions on GCE.

More information about this matter can be found in this Help Center article.

I hope this helps.

Sincerely,
George
