Running 'gcloud compute copy-files' on a compute engine VM, I get the following error:

ERROR: gcloud crashed (UnicodeDecodeError): 'ascii' codec can't decode byte 0xe2 in position 1438: ordinal not in range(128)

My username & config directory do not contain non-English characters. Any suggestions?

Hello Guy,

In order to reproduce and troubleshoot this issue further can you provide me with the following information:
1. What image have you used to create GCE instance (e.g debian-8-jessie-v20160219, ubuntu-1404-trusty-v20160222 etc) ?
2. What gcloud version you are using ( $ gcloud info) ?
3. Have you tried updating your gcloud to see if that resolves the issue ( $ gcloud components update) ?

Thanks

Faizan

Hi Faizan,

Thank you for looking into this! I just reproduced the problem with a new instance and here are the parameters I used:

1. Image: Debian GNU/Linux 8.3 (jessie) (amd64 built on 2016-02-19).
2. I updated gcloud using 'gcloud components update', and verified the problem occurred both before & after the update.
3. 'gcloud info' prints (after the update) 'Google Cloud SDK [98.0.0]'.

Thanks again and please let me know if there's any other useful information I could provide.

Guy

This issue is resolved with version 98 of gcloud (see https://code.google.com/p/google-cloud-sdk/issues/detail?id=498).
