 * Percona Server is distributed with several useful UDF (User Defined Function) from Percona Toolkit.
 * Run the following commands to create these functions:

mysql -e "CREATE FUNCTION fnv1a_64 RETURNS INTEGER SONAME 'libfnv1a_udf.so'"
mysql -e "CREATE FUNCTION fnv_64 RETURNS INTEGER SONAME 'libfnv_udf.so'"
mysql -e "CREATE FUNCTION murmur_hash RETURNS INTEGER SONAME 'libmurmur_udf.so'"

 * See http://www.percona.com/doc/percona-server/5.5/management/udf_percona_toolkit.html for more details

[FAIL] Starting MySQL (Percona Server) database server: mysqld . . . . . . . . . . . . . . failed!
invoke-rc.d: initscript mysql, action "start" failed.

What am i doing wrong here?

Hello Lawrence,

I was able to install Percona Server on a fresh Google Compute Engine instance (running the current Debian-wheezy image) by following a subset of the installation instructions that you linked to.

Three things to be aware of:
1) The installation commands require root privileges so after you ssh on to the instance, start by running the following command to switch user to root:
sudo su

2) Since it is a brand new instance you can skip the commands associated with removing software packages (at the beginning of the instructions) and start with the "add the key to your server" step.

3) Use a Machine type that is a "g1-small" or bigger when you create your instance.

Please give it another try and let me know if this works for you.

Thanks,

--Jonathan

Hello Simon,

I gave up on that and installed mysql with apt-get install mysql

I am on the very basic shared instance. Maybe that is why it did not work.

Do you have any idea why it did not work?

Not completely certain but the issue appears to be that Percona Server 5.6 requires more Memory than the 0.60 GB available in the 'f1-micro' Machine Type.
