I know this is not a GCE question but I don't see a group specific to general GCP questions.

I have multiple Google accounts. My latest account is unable to pin services from the hamburger menu to the header. This is annoying after having gotten used to services being pinned in the header. I find the hamburger menu slow, harder to access commonly used services, and I dislike waiting for the animations. Looking around it seems like the ability to pin to the header was added in 2015, and I'm assuming that the menu used to work the way it's currently working for me now. I've tried clearing out cookies, cache, logging in and out, incognito, logging in between accounts and the menu remains the way it is.

This is what I'm wanting and the way my other accounts work. Red is what's pinned.

This is what I get on my latest account.

Hello Justin,

I was not able to reproduce this behavior with my account. I need to investigate further, can you provide me with your project ID and user email through private message?

Looking forward to your response.

Hi Justin, I spoke to a colleague internally about this difference, and they should be replying back here with more information soon. We appreciate your feedback on preferring the old behavior.

Hey Justin,

I'm a product manager here at Google, and one of my areas of responsibility is navigation within the cloud console. We have a lot of plans over the coming 12 months to make some pretty dramatic improvements to navigation, and we're just getting started.

What you're seeing is an experiment that we've been running over the past couple of months with some (randomly selected) users. As you've noticed, we've made several tweaks to the way that the left nav / hamburger menu operates in order to improve general feature discoverability. One of those experiments is moving pinned content from the top bar (where there's less available space) to the top of the left nav.

The results look promising - in fact we've seen a 2x increase in pinning usage so far. Based upon that data, we do plan to roll this out to 100% of users soon (once we finalize some other optimizations). But we appreciate your feedback, and duly note that we should continue iterating on the idea of "fast switching" between nav sections. We'll keep working at it!

Kind regards,

John Posavatz  |  Product Manager  |  Google Cloud Platform

Thanks, John. I appreciate it! I hope to see some fast switching features in the near future! Until then I'll keep vimium disabled for the keyboard shortcuts provided by GCP and possibly inject my own links for when my hand is on the mouse.

John, I'm having the same issue here, and prefer the old style where I dont have to click on the hamburger menu every time I need to go somewhere. is it possible to change my account back?

This is a terrible ux change. Now all actions have to be 2 actions instead of one, because we can't have the sidebar to always expand. A widescreen monitor basically useless because it's decided the sidebar is too much to be always shown.

Hi,

As John mentioned, there will be changes made in the course of the next 12 months in regards to the navigation within the Console. There is no way for a user to revert back to the older Console version as this change is done on the backend. I would suggest to wait for the changes that John mentioned to take place and see if the changes satisfy your needs.
