I can see in the Google Cloud Platform (Compute engine) that you can create an image. Is it possible to create an image and publish it publicly so anyone can use this image?

I've looked at the documentation and couldn't see anything, I just wanted to double check

Hello Ashley,

You can export the created image to the Google Cloud Storage and share the bucket with whoever wants to use the image. Just as a side note, it's not possible to export a Windows image to GCS. More information about exporting and importing images to /from GCS can be found in these [1] [2] articles.

Another way to do it will be by giving the user "Can View" access to your project which will allow him to use the image using the gcloud command by specifying the following flag: --image="https://www.googleapis.com/compute/v1/projects/<ID-of-image-owners-project>/global/images/<image-id>", however the user will be able to view your project's contents but he can't change it. This option will allow users to use the image and won't occur any extra charges on your project while using the image.

I hope this helps.

Sincerely,
George

Hi Ashley - Who are the users that you want to share the images with?  There are couple of different options

1. You can work with the Google to on board you images to Cloud Launcher - Cloud Launcher images are available to all GCP users.

2. You can also add users that you want to share the images with to your project - that will give them access to the image.

In case neither of these address your problem, please let me know what you scenario is.  Would love to understand in detail.

Thanks,
Shanmugam

Hi George,
Thanks for getting back to me. I was looking to export a Windows Image. Do you know why its not possible to export a windows image?

Are there any plans to add this or allow it?

Thanks again
Ashley

Basically, importing a Windows image (that had been exported) will not work right due to licensing restrictions that we are required by Microsoft to implement. Image sharing is an important feature request on our roadmap, that we plan to make available in the future. If you would like to tell us more about what you're trying to do so we can include the feedback in our design, please reply privately to Shanmugam, who replied earlier (he is the PM responsible for this area).

Thanks,
-P
