The following list is not exhaustive, but just a convenient group
of items that we may wish to record for creators (I have more for
later). The list comes from previous discussions and/or the current
Who's Who.

1. For each creator, we could record their Roles in comics. These are
probably best recorded at the story sequence level, as we currently do.
Nothing new is needed here.
2. For each creator, we could record the schools they attended. I
suspect this should be schools where they received some training in
their artistic profession, and would not include unrelated schools.
Should we try to include the years attended?
3. For each creator, we could record their influences (other
creators). For names that are in our database, we could link to those
names. For names outside our database, we could place them IN the
database (but record no other information on them) or we could use a
different table of names.
4. For each creator, we could record societies and other organizations
they held memberships in. Should we try to include the years attended?
Should these memberships include only organizations related to their
artistic profession?
5. For each creator, we could record any awards and honors they
received, along with the year(s) received.

Thoughts?

I am leery of recording influences.  What is the standard for judging?  How are disputes resolved?  What if a living creator (or the estate of a dead creator) objects to a link?  I do not think we want to get into this, but having raised my objection I will leave it to the Board.

I generally think that including years where possible is nice.

Do we want to discuss studios at this time?  It's more complex than most situations as there are generally spans of time during which an artist is associated with a shop, but may have produced work both through and outside of that shop.  And "associated with" can be a very confusing relationship.  It may be simpler to just flag individual stories believed to have been done through the shop.

thanks,
-henry

I don't think influences should be based on opinions of users--Jerry recorded influences reported by creators themselves (on questionnaires).  So the standard would be--did the creator in question *tell* us these were his/her influences?  If not, did he/she tell someone else, and if so who and where is this recorded?  Only self-identified influences should be documented.

I think we eventually want to link to a detailed listing of their specific credits, as recorded in the comics part of the GCD.  However, I also think it would be nice to have a capsule bio or somesuch for each creator.  Equivalent to the synopsis in the comics part of the GCD.  One to three or four paragraphs outlining their career at a high level.  An overview telling you what this person is known for.  "A longtime DC artist...", "A prolific writer of Golden Age funny animal stories...", etc.

2.  For each creator, we could record the schools they attended.  I suspect this should be schools where they received some training in their artistic profession, and would not include unrelated schools.  Should we try to include the years attended?

This is data that Jerry's already collected.  So, do we want to keep this data, or leave it in the Who's Who?  Since we already have it, I say preserve it.  Document vocational schools for sure, and any institutions of higher education.  With years attended.

3.  For each creator, we could record their influences (other creators).  For names that are in our database, we could link to those names.  For names outside our database, we could place them IN the database (but record no other information on them) or we could use a different table of names.

See my response to Henry earlier.  Another field where Jerry's already providing us with data.

Yes, yes, and yes.

5.  For each creator, we could record  any awards and honors they received, along with the year(s) received.

Again, yes.

Since Jerry recorded all this info we should too.

Some of them, like influences, should be recorded by the creator themselves only, either in questionaires or published interviews.

We should consider each attribute having a source field attached to it to record where the data came from. So with influences, we record that it came from the subjects own questionaire.

Great idea to record sources in another field. We should probably
be doing that for other info in the existing database too.

I'm not going to try to persuade anyone that we should include influences, whether Jerry had them or not, but I will say that ultimately, I hope that we will.  I envision the GCD as the ultimate scholarly resource and that will include biographical essays and (peer-reviewed) analyses that might or might not include discussions of influences.

But that's not now.  That's "someday."

Not sure if it's been mentioned before but I would also like to see
characters created by the creators. Maybe not every character created
since some would have pages but the more significant characters.

There seemed to be general agreement that we should record the
following data. Most is already recorded in the Who's Who. Changes
suggested during the discussion are in bold underline.

1. Creator Roles in comics are currently recorded at the story sequence
level. Nothing new is needed here.
2. For each creator, we will record the schools they attended. This
will be limited to schools where they received some training in their
artistic profession, and would not include unrelated schools. _*This
will include degrees received and the years attended*_.
3. For each creator, we will record their artistic influences (other

creators). For names that are in our database, we could link to those
names. For names outside our database, we could place them IN the
database (but record no other information on them) or we could use a

different table of names. _*Only self-identified influences will be
documented.*_
4. For each creator, we will record societies and other organizations
related to their artistic profession that they held memberships in.
_*This will include the years of membership and offices held.*_
5. For each creator, we will record any awards and honors they

received, along with the year(s) received.

_*6. For each creator, we will record a short biography (1-4
paragraphs) noting highlights of their career. This might include a
list of characters they created. This would be written by our indexers,
not copied whole from another source.*_
_*7. For all creator information, we will record the source of the data
(creator interview, creator survey, creator's records, public records,
published source, other research, etc.).*_

I'll move on to another group of data next. I will take up the
discussion of studios down the road.
