Inside a series we decided do not count the variants for the issue count of the series. So variants have no effect on issue counts in the code.
In the few cases of a variant in a different series this results in some problems. We do checks on issue counts for doing 'some things'. It also looks odd there, when we have issues present, but no count. So we should count the variants in such a case for the issue count of a series (assuming that only one variant per base issue is present and not more).
