Series titles can be italicized now, so gcd_link_issue links could italicize the series title portion of the link by adding asterisks to both ends of the title.

I don't think we should use additional styling for links. Wikipedia is not doing that either.

Wikipedia does use formatting in its template links when the resulting text should be formatted. See for example https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Ship , which italicizes the parts of ships' names that should be italicized.

Or even more analogous, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Cite_magazine which italicizes the work (magazine series title). :-)

We have nothing in our style guide to italicize GCD data. The reference is to external names, titles of series cataloged in the GCD are explicitly excluded.
This is not a tech aspect at this stage, but a style guide one. Get that changed, and this can be reopened.

https://docs.comics.org/wiki/Style_Guide#General%20rules: Ideally, the titles of novels, book-length non-fiction, magazines, journals, paintings, radio series, television series, and motion pictures would be italicized, but the current GCD set-up does not allow that [NOTE: GCD now allows italics in Notes fields: use an asterisk before and after the title. The preview will display them italicized].

I am referring to the last sentence of that paragraph
This does not apply to the titles of series cataloged in the GCD but only to those that are referred to in notes.

I think you're misreading that. The title of the series cataloged in GCD would be just a plain unformatted text field. In the Notes field, where the Notes are stored rather than where the Series title is stored, the titles of magazines (even those also stored in the GCD) would ideally be italicized. The GCD set-up didn't allow it then, but it does now.
