we should use one of the many packages for displaying mailing lists for our old archives. and maybe add the current traffic from google as well to have it all in one place.

I think putting the mailing lists in Google was a good idea. I would rather move that old mailing list to the current lists' archives at Google.

I don't think it makes any sense to discuss about InnoDb against MyISAM's performance (for instance) if we are going to put unnecessary load on the server.

Putting the mail out was a good idea, mostly when there is a huge amount of SPAM nowadays.

Maintaining an email server clean is time consuming and will waste our load and bandwidth. Please avoid it.

not an email server, just displaying the archives.

one can't import old mail archives into google groups as far as I know.

I don't think there is a way to import the mailing list archives into google as threaded messages intertwined with everything else.

We should revisit this after the support server moves. To address Andrés comments, I don't think anyone's suggesting hosting mail archives on the production machine.

To clarify (since I am not sure what you are saying)

I suggest to host the mailing list archives on our server

I don't suggest to host the mailing list on our server, this should stay at google.

E.g. use http://lurker.sourceforge.net/

It would allow us to import the old archives (which we can't at google-groups). It would allow us other access controls (e.g. handling login via django and allow all members)

annoyed again by the not that good browsing and searching functionality at googlegroups, and the lack of import of old mails

we (someone willing) could investigate http://www.nabble.com/

seems like they are an alternative. They give a web-interface to a mailing-list. With access control, and import seems to be possible.

We could try with the tech-list if and how this works.

It also seems to be embeddable and one seems to be able to use custom urls, so we could use forum.comics.org (or something like that) to point there.
