uploads covers are horizontal in preview (post upload) but vertical in full image

Having some weird uploads of cover scans that look fine on my PC and also my photo editor, then I upload and some are showing up as horizontal (sideways) in the preview (post upload) but if you click the full uploaded cover image link they are in the correct vertical orientation.

Likely some image info on orientation not correctly stored in the image
files, where the browser and the employed image library for processing
the files interpret it differently.
Best to open and save the files with an image program (maybe a different
one than you used before) and save once more.
Nothing we can really do on the backend.

That was my guess also. Photo previewers on my end show it correctly, and also when I load it into my Affinity Photo editor. But a simple re-edit and then save back to disk seems to fix whatever metadata was originally borked.
