As Lionel works on the requirements doc, I statrted looking at some
online newspapers to see what kind of problems would develop. I think
the last proposal included indexing by newspaper??

The archive, in pdf, for Red Bank Independent Daily Register dated
Friday, September 28, 1962, is at http://209.212.22.88/data/rbr/1960-1969/1962/1962.09.28.pdf

[Note: I wasn't able to background to the main page of this site, if
anyone can figure out how]

I chose this issue because the paper published 5 days per week and
doubled up on some strips to include Saturday, but not others. The
paper is also relatively sparse in comics content compared to some
others.

The indicia info for the paper is on page 6.

This is what I get:

Red Bank Independent Daily Register
Published Monday through Friday
Indicia info on Page 6
Friday, September 28, 1962

Some syndicated items -- Daily Crossword; Astro-Guide by Ceean; ...by
George; etc -- on pages 4-5 and elsewhere

Untitled, unsigned one-panel 'cartoon' on page 6 (man and woman in
kitchen)
Untitled, unsigned one-panel 'cartoon' on page 6 (Mariner II and
Capitol Hill)
CARMICHAEL syndicated one-panel 'cartoon' on page 6

HEALTH CAPSULES by Michael A. Petil, M.D., syndicated one-panel
'cartoon' on page 7
GINGER by Gettermann, syndicated one-panel 'cartoon' on page 12

Page 19 comics; 2 days (Friday and Saturday, 9-28 and 9-29-1962:
STEVE ROPER by Saunders and Overgard (signed)
MICKEY MOUSE by Walt Disney (signed)
The PHANTOM by [Lee] Falk and [Sy] Barry (signed)
MARK TRAIL by Ed Dodd (signed)
NUBBIN by [Jim] Burnett and [George] Crenshaw (signed)
POGO by Walt Kelly (signed)
MARY WORTH by [Allen] Saunders and [Ken] Ernst (signed)
RIVETS by [George] Sixta (signed)
THE RYATTS by Cal Alley (signed)

EVER HAPPEN TO YOU? by Blake, syndicated one-panel 'cartoon' on page
23
DENNIS THE MENACE by Hank Ketchum, syndicated one-panel 'cartoon' on
page 24

On the first pass, I skipped the syndicate info, ghosts, etc that I
would have pulled from the Strippers' Guide. I also missed the dates
on the single panel cartoons.

Some items we may not want to include,

By the way, I was going to upload these to the file section, but
noticed that part of Google Groups will be discontinued on January
13th.

Do you just mean this:

Then you can search by date, or word/phrase...

Good stuff, Art.

I started my project of inventorying the strips in the Arkansas Gazette before we launched our GCD strip group.  I have not recorded  additional syndicated materials and I omitted editorial cartoons.

And, as a sample:

Friday, 1 October 1909

Never Again! by Ted Powers
Mutt and Jeff by Bud Fisher

That was it.  Pretty skimpy in the aughties.  I don't have all my notes with me but if I recall correctly the Gazette began carry comics in the summer of 1909 -- Gus Mager's "Monk" strips and some of those Ted Powers strips that don't seem to have consistent names.  I'm up to July 1911 and the Gazette still doesn't have a comics page.  Generally they were running three or four strips a day, with only "Mutt and Jeff" appearing in the same place every day.

The link is interesting, where is that pulling from? I would love to pull consecutive days of it if possible.

Another thing, I can't wait till we can index this stuff correctly. Its going to be an interesting project and I think some of us will enjoy doing this. I know I will.

I talked to a former Newspaper guy here at work and he mentioned that is not uncommon for strips to be published out of order accidently as they receive the strips for the entire week all at once and sometimes the layout people would pull out the wrong strip.

So listing the strip "title" or first few lines a dialogue maybe prudent to catch when it happens in various newspapers.

my best
