I realize that it might be possible to treat a lot of cartoons as though they were strips.  My question would be, is this a general rule, or are these exceptions?

If it's not a general rule, then that means either we'd have to exclude a lot of cartooons (but include others), or we'd be forcing a lot of things in that didn't fit properly.  It it's not a general rule, then it would probably make sense to create a separate cartoon database project.  And if we were to do that, then it would make more sense (at least to me) to put all the editorial/sports/gag/etc cartoons in that project, not just the ones that couldn't be shoehorned in to the strips database.

If, on the other hand, people feel that *most* cartoons have the same elements as newspaper strips--a common, identifiable name, a common premise, etc--then it would NOT make sense to make a new project to handle them, since they'd fit well within this project.

My gut feeling is that the majority of cartoons don't fit within the strip model, and we'd be better off putting all of them in a separate cartoon project.

So the problem with fitting cartoons into this model is that they have no meta data--there's no strip name, the cartoons generally aren't connected (other than being by a given cartoonist). They generally have no continuity of any kind. So they'd need a different indexing model (IMO) to address the different challenges of indexing them. If you think about how you'd go about indexing the cartoons in a week's worth of your local paper, you'll see, I think, that you'll need to collect different information in order to really identify individual cartoons.

Ultimately, I'd like for them to be included, somewhere, somehow. But for a lot of early stuff -- in the oughts and teens -- it's not altogether clear what's a "regular" strip and what's an editorial cartoon. TAD Dorgan's stuff is one of the creators I'm thinking of.

One of the things the Senior Editors did get voted on was on gag cartoon reprint books. The decision was that cartoons are comics and therefore indexable in the GCD. So we could include them in this new database without a separate one, but have a list for "Types"

Gag Cartoon
Sport Cartoon
Comic Panel
Comic Strip
Editorial Cartoon

and so on

Using this as a starting point, u can build up your index from there.

I'm in agreement with you, Lionel. I think we need a separate cartoon
database for the reason you stated: MOST single panel cartoons (New
Yorker, editorial cartoons, etc) are different from regular strips.

I totally agree that cartoons are comics, and that books collecting such should be eligible for the comic book database.

But the question being asked here is, are cartoons (in general) comic strips?  Yes, there are *some* cartoons which have strip-like elements--like a recurring title, or recurring characters.  And some that I would definitely consider strips--Dennis, Family Circus, Far Side.  But *in general*, I think they're different enough from strips to warrant a separate database.
