This is what I like but I remember the tech guys suggesting the people
simply could not work out how to use multiple lists. So it might be
ineffective.

From all of those multiple pick methods, I like the
fiction/non-fiction then onward but I would be curious has to what
current count is?
I wonder if it is at all possible to get some tech input here, I
really like the tag system that Wordpress uses, it would allow the
implementation of (1) but without a multiple pick select.

I was a big proponent of top-level genres at the start, but as I've said before I've come around pretty firmly to option 1 above since then.

Not the technical issue rather the user issue, where they can't
understand how to use it.
