Technically, politics should be allowed on Chat, with the "OT"
header, so I'm not sure what happened unless there were personal
insults being made.
American politics is such a scorched-earth subject anymore, that I
don't think a reasonable discussion can take place, no matter what
the setting.

I bailed out of the thread as soon as I saw politics mentioned and pride myself on being able to ignore all the messages with that as a header. I was getting tired of getting them, though and was almost ready to unsubscribe for a while before it stopped.

The GCD-Chat e-mail discussion list is where those interested in any form of general comics discussion can meet. On this list all sorts of topics like comic history, industry, marketplace, fandom, collecting, continuity, characters, stories, creators, news, and current events get discussed. This list also allows discussion of any type to take place even if it goes beyond comics.
Sometimes comic conversation on this list may drift into related sister arts (animation, comic strips, movies, TV, etc.). This is not considered off-topic but instead a carry-over of conversation. If the thread removes itself further from its original source, we ask that all efforts be made to change the header. If a discussion is on a topic not about comics we ask that posters include an Off-Topic tag (OT) in the header.

The conversation went on reasonably well for awhile, with some
folks objecting to politics on the list. I then posted our chat list
rules, which is the same excerpt that Ray just posted here. Again,
things went reasonably well, with only the person who posted the first
insult continuing to border on insults. Some folks reminded others that
this list indeed does allow politics, and even brought Jerry Bails' name
up. Lionel posted a couple of times also, to keep things toned down.
The original poster then apologized for starting the whole affair.
However, the person who made the first insult still had more, and
Ralf shut down the whole thread. Within minutes of his action, 2 other
people let loose bad language or insults and were shut down. Several
others continued to reply and were shut down in the next hour. Tony
wisely got around things by changing the topic header and posting a
political joke. :-)
