The Carnegie-Tsinghua Center for Global Policy is seeking highly qualified and motivated students to apply for its ten-week Summer Internship Program. Selected interns will have the opportunity to work on important international issues, to interact with senior Chinese and international scholars and experts, and to become an integral part of a growing global network of Carnegie Centers, currently located in Washington, D.C., Moscow, Beirut, Beijing and Brussels.
General requirements for all Global Interns:
- Available to intern from about June 11th – Aug 24th, 2012
- Contribute approximately 40hrs/week to the Center
- Recent graduate of or current enrollment in a college or university
- Background in International Relations or a desire to work in the field
- Submit an application no later than 5:00pm EST March 31th, 2012
Individuals should have a keen interest in international affairs and international security. Applicants should have near-native written English skills; equivalent level knowledge of Chinese is an asset. Applications will be judged on academic performance, related academic study and/or work experience and recommendations. Personal interviews may be conducted. Requests for internships to start early or end later will be considered.
The internship is unpaid. Housing, travel, living expenses and medical insurance connected with the internship program must be borne by interns or by outside institutions and organizations. Interns are responsible for arranging their own travel to Beijing. Visa assistance will be provided if necessary.

- Exposure – Work closely with the Carnegie-Tsinghua Center’s Chinese and International Scholars, as well as representatives from the government and the business, diplomatic, and academic communities in Beijing that participate in the Center’s events and activities.

- Communications & Media
- Program & Research Assistants
Communications & Media
Successful candidates for the Communications & Media Team will have a strong attention to detail and effective communication skills. Computer literacy and a basic knowledge of graphic and web design, Web 2.0, Content Management Systems (CMS), and HTML are highly desired. Candidates should demonstrate superior writing skills, ability to work independently and in a team setting, have a history of meeting deadlines, and negotiate and interact with a wide range of people, including scholars, vendors, event staff, and contributing teams.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Event planning: define topics, identify speakers, arrange venues and dining options etc.
- Provide onsite event preparation and logistical support
- Work with teammates to ensure that events are successfully marketed and publicized including press releases, invitations, and other materialss
- Oversee maintenance and improvement of the Center’s contact database system
- Assist in media outreach and respond to press inquiries
- Update the Center’s website in both English and Chinese
- Create and maintain branding materials and other visual aids: podium banners, publication covers and layouts, event backdrops and posters, and video publications
- Record events though the use of audio, video and photography
- Work closely with the Center’s leadership and other intern teams to synthesize complex and nuanced dialogue discussion into concise event summaries for publication and dissemination
- Draft documents including flyers, pamphlets, posters, invitations and agendas li>
- Translate text from Chinese to English and from English to Chinese
Program & Research Assistants
Successful candidates for the Program & Research Assistant Team will have a strong attention to detail and the ability to work independently. Program & Research Assistants should have knowledge of their assigned scholar’s field of expertise and show a strong interest in conducting research. Candidates should demonstrate superior communication and organizational skills and should have previous research experience.
Carnegie-Tsinghua Resident Scholars specialize in the following research areas:
- U.S. and China foreign policy, global and regional security issues
- Non-proliferation, arms control; China-India relations
- EU-China Relations
- Impact of Chinese public opinion of foreign policy
- U.S.-China bilateral relations
- Chinese public diplomacy and soft power
- China’s trade and investment relations in the developing world
- Impact of China’s core values and foreign policy
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Act as liaison between the assigned scholar and the intern teams
- Enhance communication between the scholar and the Center
- Update the Center staff and online calendar with details of scholar events and publications
- Work closely with scholars and intern teams to plan and organize events
- Conduct research as directed by their assigned scholar(s)
- Assist the assigned scholar(s) with articles, reports, and other publications
- Compile scholar’s media coverage and share details with Center staff
- Manage the library and inventory of all center publications and other materials
