Dear GCBT members,

Some thoughts, comments, and requests regarding our 2025 Ride Leaders and future 2026 Ride Leaders...

First let me thank all the members that volunteered to organize and run one of the 29 "Sunday" club rides that were scheduled this year! It is getting more difficult each year to fill the ride schedule and to find new members willing to lead a ride. I'd appreciate if members could give being a ride leader some thought ahead of our AGM and be willing to volunteer at that time. When I became a GCBT member back in 2013 I recall we had a glossy, colour,
double sided handout with all rides outlined, available weeks before the first ride in April. While I'm not advocating for exactly that, I do hope we can fill out the calendar earlier than was often the case this past year.

The topic of honorariums has come up in the past and I'd like to get a sense of where the majority of our members sit on this. When I led my first ride, I believe the honorarium was $25 and very few members led two rides. Over the years the honorarium rose to $50 and the last couple years $100 per ride. My personal feeling is that $100 is too much, especially when members do multiple rides. However, it does take some effort to map the route, check the route by riding or driving it a few days ahead, updating the route due to construction, and leading the ride on the day. I anticipate this will be an item on the agenda, please have your thoughts ready.

Director of Touring,
Mark Brown

To those who have not lead a ride I offer this encouragement. Take GCBT members on your favourite and most beautiful ride in your area. You are bringing joy into member's lives and promoting cycling, one of humankind's greatest pursuits. Plus it's just a lot of fun.  Your fellow club members will be grateful and shower you with praise. As Nike says "just do it".
Don

P.S.
I've always thought the honorarium was unnecessary. Ride leadership should be a labour of love.
