Hello Team,

I'm starting this new thread regarding crisis mapping. We have to continue our work. As of today there are 3,385 evacuation centers and we have to prioritize mapping some  regions (the typhoon has been changing course in the last 24 hours).

WE NEED MORE VOLUNTEERS! Please refer them to me directly since I need to vet those who will have access to the map and data.

I will share the map and list of shelters only to those who volunteer.
*Please map only based on the official shelter map list of DSWD

Hello Team,

The typhoon is currently hitting hard Samar and Leyte with storm surges. I'm watching this live news telecast.

Kindly continue mapping shelters, this would be very important for relief efforts and let us pray that we won't have casualties with this typhoon.

Regards,
Aileen

Hello Team,

Typhoon Ruby has come ashore. We still have a lot of work to do to map shelters.

Towns in the SSA (storm surge advisory) should be prioritized for the mapping. The list is here:

I'm tied up a bit with Person Finder stuff, but will be coming in and out of mapping. Kindly let me know if you have any questions.

Please stay safe and dry!

Regards,
Aileen

Hello Team,

Thanks so much for all the help. We have over 1,500 shelters mapped, a percentage of which was mapped automatically through a script. We need to get more shelters mapped for relief efforts and we have almost 4,000 shelters listed.

One of the things that would help is if we can successfully automate more shelters. What we need to do though is clean up how the names of the shelters are written. I hope you can help clean up how the shelter names are written for those that are not yet mapped. Here are examples of how we should clean up the list (but basically it should be written based on how it's written on the map for easier searching):

Written: San Vicente Elem. School
Spell it out
Should be: San Vicente Elementary School

Written: E. Barretto Sr NHS Covered Court
Spell it out
Should be: E. Barretto Sr. National High School

Written: 3. Barangay Bagumbayan Chapel
Remove the number
Should be: Barangay Bagumbayan Chapel

Written: BUGAONG BARANGAY HALL
Fix capitalization
Should be: Bugaong Barangay Hall

Written: Porcenas Primary School (6 classrooms)
Remove the addl info
Should be: Porcenas Primary School

Written: Barangay Hall/Chapel/Covered Court
Maps will not find this, better if to focus on one point
Should be: Merville Park Barangay Hall

The more shelters we map now would mean that next time we won't have to re-map shelters and just focus on those that still cannot be found on the map.

Thank you for your continued help #parasabayan. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Regards,
Aileen

Hello Team,

Thank you so much for all the help and time you have spent mapping shelters! Your contribution has made a huge impact in helping out for the typhoon in the last week. It was certainly one of the longest typhoons we have had in the last few years. We have successfully mapped more than 1,500 shelters for this response and now we are in process of improving the map. As requested by DSWD I have removed access to the spreadsheet and the map so we can focus on bringing the crisis map to the next level, we hope to do away in doing manual mapping for 2015.

For now please make sure schools, covered courts, barangay halls, day care and health centers in your neighborhood are mapped. Please head over to http://mapmaker.google.com to check if these places have been mapped in your neighborhood.

Again, thank you so much for all the help! Please let me know if you have any questions.

Regards,
Aileen
