ONLINE PRESS CONFERENCE:

16th July | 2:30 to 4 pm

Implement Women's Reservation Now: Ensure Social Justice, Inclusion and Federalism

Zoom Meeting Details:

Meeting ID: 890 5087 4840

Dear media and movement friends,

The Women Reservation Act was passed by both Houses of Parliament in 2023. Still, it remains unimplemented due to the arbitrary linking of women reservation with census and delimitation. In April 2026, an attempt was made to further make it conditional on expansion of seats in Lok Sabha. It was defeated by a combined opposition. This made it clear that the government only wants to weaponize women reservation to push its political agenda of delimitation, gerrymandering and attacking the federal character of our democracy.

The current formulation of women reservation also leaves out many marginalized identities including women from OBC communities, transgender and non-binary persons, women with disabilities, women from minority communities etc. Further, there is lack of clarity on how the reserved seats will be identified in a participatory, impartial manner.

To discuss all these issues, the NCWR, a pan India non-partisan coalition of organisations, networks and individuals working together for women’s reservation and equal political representation for women is organizing an online press conference. We will also present our demands to the Government of India for the upcoming Monsoon Session of Parliament.

The following speakers will share their thoughts and inputs:

Shashi Yadav, MLC, Bihar Assembly, CPI-ML & AIPWA

Hasina Khan, Bebaak Collective, Mumbai

Abirami Jotheeswaran, All India Dalit Mahila Adhikar Manch, New Delhi
