I kinda wonder now... who might still be here. :-)

Doorway

---

"Adam, you just need to walk through."

"Yeah, but what if... how do I know what's on the other side?"

"Well, I told you!"

"I know, but... "

"What?"

"Brin, it's just a door."

"No problem then."

"And it goes into the hallway."

"No. No, it doesn't. Well, it does, but that's not the only place."

"Well then, where does it go?"

"We talked this all through, Adam."

"Tell me again."

"It goes... well, it goes to any number of places. It depends."

"But it's a door?"

"It's not really. The door goes through to the hallway. The symbol the door stands for, that goes..."

"Yes, Brin?"

"...Goes... it's dependent on a complex equation. There's a multiversal loop with the... Oh, come on, you're rolling your eyes at me."

"It's just... can you hear what you're saying?"

"I know it's difficult to get a handle on."

"No, I've got an education. It's impossible to get a handle on."

"Possibly, given I have a head-start."

"You know, at first... I just wanted to fuck you."

"I know. I'm pleased. That worked very well."

"Just take you home and pull your panties off..."

"Yes. But not now. Anyway, I'm not wearing any."

"And then you somehow suckered me in. You're not?"

"Oh, Adam, you suckered yourself in. You told me it wasn't just the sex, and that you love me."

"I do."

"Then trust me."

"I... how? You're talking nonsense."

"If I am, then it's just a doorway, and you'll be standing in the hall. Okay, you'll be naked."

"Huh?"

"You can't cross a portal with clothes on."

"No?"

"Fuck, no! There's an... oh, never mind what it is. You can't."

"So I just have to walk into the hallway naked."

"Yup... but you need to be prepared, in your mind, that you won't be in the hallway, because otherwise you'll be disoriented."

"And you say I'll actually be..."

"Another fractal slice of this multiversal lock."

"But that looks like a field?"

"Yeah. Wheat. Kinda."

"Alright, alright."

"Really?"

"Really."

Brin grinned, and dropped her sundress to the floor. She kicked her sandals across the room, and twirled. "I'm ready." Olive skin shone in the morning light. Pert breasts moved with her body. Her pubes flashed by, as red as the hair on her head. Small angel-wing tattoos decorated either side of her spine, up high, and showing off her physique. By the time she turned to face Adam again he was smiling.

"I was never going to actually turn you down, was I?"

"It seems unlikely."

"I love you, Brin, and I'll follow you anywhere."

"Good, because it might be quite a day."

"Why do you say that?"

"You'll see. For now, wheat-ish field, summer sun, okay?"

"Yeah, alright."

"Naked."

"Okay, okay."

Adam took a little longer to divest himself of his clothing, untying his shoes and pulling them off before dropping his shorts to the floor. He pulled a shirt over his head, and then, grinning at Brin, wiggled his hips, and pulled his boxers to his knees. His cock wasn't hard, but it was on its way. She always had this effect on him.

"Much better. Just for the record, Adam, I love you, too."

"I know. I know. I just feel like there's a whole lot about you I don't understand."

"There is."

"See?"

They hugged, and were both tempted to stay just where they were a little longer, but Brin pushed him away with a laugh. "Not now, horny boy. I'll do you a deal though."

"What's that?"

"Tonight? On the other side? I'm yours."

"Oh, well, you should have said that in the first place."

"You just cannot multi-task, can you? Point that thing at the door, then, and let's go."

"Who goes first?"

"Oh, we must go together. You need to be holding my hand."

"Oh? Why?"

"Because... well, actually, that's hard to explain. But if you don't, you'll be in the hallway, naked, with an erection."

"Good enough."

"So take my hand."

"Yes, Mistress."

She leaned in and kissed him. "I love it when you call me that."

"Good."

"Yeah. Give me a minute. I need to calculate something." They stood facing the door, and Brin closed her eyes for a moment, muttering quietly to herself. She turned to Adam, and squeezed his hand. "Okay, I think that's right. The... it's like a carousel. If it's spinning, you need to choose your moment to hop on."

"Okay."

"And off again."

"Oh?"

"Never mind." She leaned forward and opened the door. "You can see the hallway, right?"

"Yup. Can't you?"

"Oh. Umm... if I try hard enough."

"You really are weird."

"You – as the song says – ain't seen nothing yet."

"Fuck."

"Later. You ready? You need to jump through when I say, and then keep listening and I'll tell you to jump again. Do not let go of my hand."

"Ready. Love you."

"Love you too. Okay, jump!"

Adam leapt, a hesitant moment behind Brin, but still holding her hand, and instead of the hallway, where he fully expected to land, he was sort of floating. His head couldn't quite figure what was going on, but he had enough math background to somehow know that the lines and curves around him meant something, and just as he was starting to understand that they were intersections of some sort of probabilities, his thoughts were interrupted by Brin.

"You still with me?"

"Yep. Sorry for not believing."

"You can't, until you do it. It's not over yet, though. One more jump."

"You're the boss."

"We're a team. This is, admittedly, more my wheelhouse."

"Yeah..."

"Okay, and... Jump!"

Adam felt the compression of Brin's hand in his, and a change in air pressure. The billowing lines disappeared, and his feet hit the ground. Brin landed beside him, with more grace than he could manage. She flexed her legs, bent at the knees, and stayed standing. He tipped to the side, and fell, his landing cushioned by the wheat, waving in the breeze in the hot summer sun.

He clambered to his feet, but stopped to take a closer look. "Oh, that's not wheat."

"No, but kinda. It does the same job here."

"So where are we?"

"My home. Well, the field's a little way from my home."

Adam looked in the distance, and realised it wasn't just the wheat. Everything looked just a little out of whack. The fields were bluer than he would have expected, and the sky had an odd tinge of purple. Turning around on the spot, he noticed something else. Some animals were grazing in the distance. As they noticed his movement, some started to walk towards the two of them. Large animals, they were, and Adam looked back at Brin to see if they were in trouble.

"Oh. Borfeds. Shit."

"Shit?"

"Omnivorous, and quite fond of people."

"Fond?"

"For lunch."

"Shit, indeed."

"Yeah. I wasn't going to spring this on you just yet..."

"Huh?"

Brin turned away from him, bent forward a little, and crossed her arms across her chest, pressing in a way the stretched the muscles on her back. But Adam wasn't really watching that, because he had noticed as soon as she turned that the tattoos beneath her shoulders had disappeared, and been replaced with real, feathered, white wings. Before he could think to say anything, Brin's muscle contractions had forced blood to flow to the wings, and they were expanding quickly, puffing and spreading.

Brin turned back to him, a smile on her face. "Oh, that feels so much better." And she spread what were now huge wings behind her, creating a gust of wind that blew warm dust in Adam's face.

"You're... an angel?"

"What? No. Oh, the..." and she flapped the wings again. "I'm not sure how that particular legend started, but it does seem as though some my countryfolk have visited before. I'm no angel, Adam."

"I'm a bit... lost."

"Yeah, I tried to warn you as best I could. Oh fuck, come here, my love. Give me a hug."

"Not sure if I'm ready."

"You'd better be. Look behind you."

Adam turned and gasped as he realised the... what did she call them? The borfeds were running now, fast and silent. Stampeding really. Just then, Brin took hold of his shoulders, and spun him back to face her.

"Trust me again?"

"I'm short on options, right?"

"Yeah, maybe. Hold tight."

Before Adam had a moment to realise quite what was happening, Brin had wrapped him tightly against her body, her breasts crushed against him. She bent and then quickly pushed with her legs, just as her wings swept down, and catapulted the two of them into the sky.

By the time Adam looked down, they were twenty metres into the sky above the field, and getting higher. He looked at Brin, grinning despite himself.

"You're stronger than you look."

"Here I am, yes."

"I held doors for you."

"And you will again."

"I need... I need a chance to sit and digest some of this."

"Yes, I know. I'll take you home."

"Oh?"

"To meet my parents. And my siblings."

"Oh, God, I have no pants!"

"I can tell. It doesn't matter here, I promise."

"Still..."

"Listen, they are going to greet you with great excitement. Parties will be held."

"What, why?"

"Because you are my beloved."

"Are you important or something?"

"Not especially. Well, I wasn't when I left."

"Then why the fuss for the two of us? Shit, are we supposed to be married or something?"

"We can be, should you wish, but it matters not. And actually, it's not the two of us."

"No?"

"Three."
