PEDOPHILE HORROR IN ZURICH

ZURICH (AFP) - A Swiss company director appeared in a Zurich
court Monday over the discovery of five videos allegedly
showing him sexually abusing and torturing two babies.

Rene Osterwalder, a 43-year-old divorced father of three,
acknowledges that he can be seen mistreating the seven- and
eight-month-old infants in the five cassettes, which equally
depicted several implements including gynecological tools and
a phallus-shaped pacifier.

Also appearing in the closed-door trial is Osterwalder's
27-year-old former secretary-turned-girlfriend, who is charged
with being an accomplice.

It was the defendant's ex-wife who notified authorities in
1993 about the videos. They were uncovered in an apartment
rented by Osterwalder in Amsterdam, where he moved with his
girlfriend in 1992.

He was arrested, given a suspended prison sentence for illegal
possession of guns, then extradited back to Switzerland.

According to the Swiss press, the babies in the videos, filmed
in 1991 and 1992, were the offspring of a drug addict. They
were reported to still be alive.

Prosecutors say Ostwerwalder bought the children from a
pedophile network -- a charge that Osterwald denies.

Ostwerwalder's lawyers have portrayed their client as the
product of a desperate childhood in which he was placed in
several foster homes and sexually abused at the age of 10.

The trial, expected to last three weeks, is being followed by
a some 50 journalists.
