The following is NOT a Themestream plug. It's a brief excerpt from a 9,000-word
essay that combines straightforward literary criticism and portraiture with
literary coming of age in the form of a deeply personal essay. It will appear
this October in Write-on-Line Publishing's pioneering Internet-only essay
anthology, "On the Move: the Net, the Street and the Community".

writers are encouraged to contribute.

It's a long story, but back in 1977 I discovered Gore Vidal's work. It changed
my life. I might or might not have become a writer without him, but I would
certainly have become a very different kind of writer. Not known for wasting
time with aspring writers, he nevertheless encouraged my first efforts back in
the early 1980s. We exchanged a few letters, and then I had a chance to meet
him. . . .
