Gay Marriage 3/2/2004

Friends on both sides of the gay marriage issue asked me over the weekend if
I was going to do a perspective on the subject. I chuckled and said I
probably would leave that one alone. Then I thought well that is a cop out.

Marriage can be a legal act and a religious act or it can be just be a legal
act. The two do not have to be the same. When it comes to the legal act.
Whether you approve or not, we are in a period of evolution and that
evolution I believe will lead to the legal right to marry being available to
all citizens.

Between now and then, and I believe it will be sooner rather than later,
there will be incredible posturing on both sides of the issue. In fact it
has already started.

But change will come and it will come much faster than it took to give women
and blacks equal rights in this country.

You do not have to approve of same sex marriage and your religion does not
have to approve. If we listen to the loud voices out there, loud voices on
both sides, we will be misled. Social change in this country does not come
from the extremes. It comes from the middle. Slowly the middle is growing on
this issue. Not a majority but growing.

So count on it, gay marriage will be upheld in this country. After all, we
Americans have much to be proud of, none more so than being the land of the
free.
