Hi Johann

How're things? How're the UAV's flying?

I'm looking for an ArduPilotMega and oilpan, have the Mediatek GPS already so don't need that. What's the cost currently?

Good morning Johann,

I am very new to this forum and setting up your RC plane as a UAV. I do love flying and want to get into UAV's. Could you assist me on this or refer me to someone that can. I live in PTA East. I have a few nitro models and looking to get me a electric flyer (for this purpose). What do I need to convert it to UAV, and prices?

Thank you for your help.

Hello,

Hi Christiaan,

Bly daar is iemand naby. Ek is in Moreleta Park.

Wanneer gaan julle weer UAV's vlieg. Of is ek verkeerd? Wat is die kostes?
Dankie vir die kontak maak.

Hello,

Great thanks. Hoe akkuraat is hy?

http://dronezone.co.za/product_info.php?cPath=1_6&products_id=166

http://code.google.com/p/ardupilot-mega/wiki/home?tm=6

Kontak maar gerug, As ek volgende naweek gaan flieg sale k jou laat weet.

dit was hier binne 2 weke in perfekte toestand, dan moet jy nog die servos and esc’s en motors koop en ek koop sulke goed by www.leadershobby.com

Jy kort net ‘n paypal account wat so 10min vat om the create http://www.paypal.com

Ek dink vir alles het ek so R1200 betaal.

Hello,

X8 is $168 by hobbyking.

Ek sal verbaas wees as jy meer as R900 gaan betaal landed.

Hi Hein,

1 x 20~30A ESC
4~5 Channel Transmitter and Reciever
1800mAh~2200mAh 3s Lipoly Battery
4 x 9g Servo for Ailerons, Elevator and Rudder
2 x 9g Servo For Flaps (Optional)
1 x Servo Reverser if using optional flaps with non-computer radio

Kry HTX900 servos. Dirt cheap in super reliable.

Ek vlieg Ardupilot op my Skywalker.

Great, het nie geweet watter werk saam nie en daar is so baie op HK se site. Watter battery pack het jy gebruik? Servos? Het sommer die
Power HD Servo 9g/1.5kg/0.11sec gekies. en die
Turnigy nano-tech 5600mah 2S2P 50~100C Hardcase Lipo Pack

Hardcase is no-no! Servos is seker ok, maar dis 'n overkill.

Sit jou order op hold ek is in 'n meeting, soek 'n 2.2 Turnigy 3S 20S.

Thanks Hein, What is your endurance on one battery?

Why do you fly FPV on your Bixler and Ardopilot on the Skywalker, is there a difference? I want to fly UAV complete autonomously so which one should I get? Can only afford one. What setup do you suggest or is the one I have 100% just with smaller battery pack? Could you give me details as to why 3S and not 2S

Luckely I didn't place the order yet. Want to get all my research complete before I buy.

http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=662

Ok dankie dat jy my se. Ek wil so sterk as moontlik gaan sodat ek die endurance kan strek. :-) So as ek 'n ligte 3000mah of selfs 4000 kan insit sal dit goed wees. As ek ArdoPilot gaan wil ek ver kan vlieg sonder worrie oor battery probleme.

Ja daai kamera is lekker klein.

Thanks, this will help a lot. Do you think that I will pay more if I order a kit plane from HK than if I buy it locally? HK have nice kits I am interested in. I am just concerned when I buy a kit the box is too big and they will charge me mad figures for import.

Interesting read about the props. :-)

Hi Hein,

I can wholeheartedly recommend this #16 808 camera mentioned but make sure it’s the V2 with the ‘D’ lens, it takes <almost!> GoPro quality video for $40 (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Latest-808-16-V2-Lens-D-Car-Key-Camera-HD-720P-Video-out-Cable-Camcorder-120-/290793596199?pt=US_Surveillance_Digital_Video_Recorders_Cards&hash=item43b4a62527). There’s a long active thread on RCGroups: http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1556994
The ebay seller doesn’t show shipping to SA as an option but if you “Contact seller”and ask, Mandy will send you a paypal invoice and the camera once paid.

Hi Guys

Sorry but I have quite a few HD cams and the 808 #16 gives great quality considering it's size and cost, but it does not come close to the more expensive HD camera's. It's not even on the same planet compared to the GoPro 1 let alone the Hero 2, or even the Hero 3.

Gerrit - HK has the full ARF kit in stock again, if you haven't ordered again.

I've just finished uprading mine with UHF, OSD, 600 HAD FPV cam and HD camera, wing reinforcements, better ESC, better motor, prop and prop adapter.

It's been very windy every day the last 7 days. Not a happy camper.

Gerrit - I've just ordered what I think will be a replacement for my Bixler 2, but I only expect it in 3 weeks, then I'll put by Bixler 2 up for sale. Just to confuse you further :)

I beg to differ: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OCq7xlG7rxk

Perhaps not that close to GoPro 2 or 3 but not bad compared to 1 @ 720p and for $160 cheaper. (Or R3000 cheaper than a new GoPro in SA.)

Hi Gerrit

I've done the following to my Bixler:
- Reinforced the wings with CF strips
- Larger motor and better prop adapter
- Better quality prop
- Magnetic hatch on the belly for easy access to wiring, esc and bec.
- 2 Magnetic hatches behind the prop on the tail boom for access to the OSD and Receiver
- Specially built camera mount (nothing fancy but works well)
- Replaced elevator servo with something more robust (hxt 900)
- Flaps
- Stabiliser (can replaced with APM)
- Quite a few specially soldered power harnesses to distribute power with minimum wiring.
- Removable tail for easier packing when transporting.
- Longer soldered servo wires on flaps for better access when connecting up.

In short, LOTS of work :)

If I can just get the total bill of materials and shipping I'll be happy. Around R2000.

Cool thank you for the list of work. It sounds as if you did lots of conversions. I am interested and would like to see some photos. What will shipping be? Is it included in the R2000?

I want to get a Bixler 2 so I would rather then buy yours as I don't know the imports costs.

When can you ship? Or do you want to wait for your new wing? What did you buy for replacment?

Hi sorry for the delay

I'll take some pics soon and send them.

I also replaced the motor wires as they are exceedingly thin and I've seen pictures of Bixlers melting because of it.

I have no idea what shipping will cost, but I travel to Jhb quite regularly, maybe I can take it along and you can meet me at or tambo.

I'd like to wait for my wing, I'd like to use the Bixler in the mean time, having too much fun:

The Skywalker is my main ship, carrying APM + FPV, used with ground station, laptop, the whole shebang.

The Bixler was supposed to be the fun, quick to deploy FPV plane, but the wing assembly process is a show stopper. So the Swift II is replacing the Bixler.

Besides this, my original APM plane was a Radian Pro, which I still have but haven't flown in 18 months. I also have a Mini Swift (looks like 'n micro bixler) which I thought would be good to train on, but it's so figety it's not a pleasure to fly.

BTW HK *still* has that 33% invoice shipping option, perhaps it's only offered to returning customers.

Cheers,
Hein

Ah, classic vraag :)

Hein

Hi Gerrit

I've just received my wing and while I now need to start moving electronics from my bixler over to the wing, I'm very sad to do so.

My Bixler is now such a pleasure to fly, it's an FPV machine, no nonsense, quick to deploy, glides like crazy but can also zoom at 90kph.

I've installed the small cnc parts special motor mount, which lifts my custom motor and I've fit a 9x45 prop, WHAT A DIFFERENCE!! I've measured it's thrust at 1.3kg, and the plane is only 870g.

I can climb to 300 meters in no time, reached 2.5km in a couple of minutes.

However, it's time to move on.

Are you still interested in it? To recap:
- Upgraded quality motor
- All servos replaced with reliable branded servos
- Flaps installed (reversed servo, no need for servo reverser, although it's available if required)
- Carbon Fibre ribbon reinforced wings, with fibre tape
- Two hatches at the back, and one on the belly, all magnetized
- Thicker wiring for motor
- Tail section magnetized not glued, so easily removable
- Original unopened FPV mount for canopy
- Original unused foam canopy
- CNC Motor mount
- 9" prop (upgraded from 7")
- Quality prop adapter

I must be honest there is some wear and tear, especially some of the decals are missing, but I would remove it all and paint it.

So I'm selling the whole thing for R1700 delivered to OR Tambo.

Let me know if you need anything else, I might have spares.

Hein

Morning Hein,

Yes, I still interested. What will be left inside if you remove all that you wanted. Will there be a receiver inside (How many channel did you use?)? What battery do you use inside? What is the extras you are talking about?

Also, can you give me a list of all I require to make the bixler a FPV.

When will you be at OR Tambo?

Hi Gerrit

The extras I mentioned are things like the CNC Engine mount, upgraded motor, FPV pod, etc, no other electronics.

The receiver I have currently in it is a RangeLink UHF, which is not compatible with your DX7(8?) unless you buy the transmitter module.

I can offer you a couple of options:
  1. I can give you the Orange receiver with Satellite for R100, which is good for about 600m range.
  2. I can offer you my AR8000 Spektrum receiver, 8 Channels with Satellite (Purchased for R1200) for R550 (I currently have it on Gumtree for R700). That should be good for 1km+, I've used it in this Bixler, but did not test the limits.
  3. Alternatively you can look at buying a Turnigy 9X tranmistter (About $50) and sell your DX7(8), then I can give you my Frsky transmitter module and receiver with long range antennas for R900. That should easily to 2.5 - 5km.

To have a basic FPV system, you'll need a FPV camera, transmitter, receiver and goggles or screen. You can look at Hobbykings' bundle for R3000 which includes all 4 - pretty good deal.

You might want a OSD as well (On screen Display) which is anything from $15 - $300, depending on what you want. I have a bare bones OSD that will show you your battery levels on-screen for R200.

GIve me a shout on Skype: heinduplessis, then I can give you a tour of the Bixler and we can discuss details.
I'm expecting a visit to Midrand towards the end of the week, I'll let you now.

Cheers,
Hein

Oh yes, the battery - I'm flying with 2200mAh batteries, they're nice and generic, lots of models fly with it. You should be able to get one for under R150 at a local hobby shop, or I can give you one of mine (slightly used) for R90.

So if you take the Orange receiver for R100 extra and the battery for R90 you have everything you need to fly the Bixler 2, then you can take a break and upgrade to FPV later.

Cheers,
Hein
