Hi Everyone
I’m sure everyone has heard the tragic news about the two school boys who were lost in drowning incidents during the last week.
I just want to ask everyone to reinforce your safety protocols when the cubs and scouts are in the water.
· Be sure that the parent has given permission on the consent form for the cub / scout to take part in swimming activities.
· Use the buddy system.
· Whenever scouts are swimming, there must always be someone on look out, a defined swimming area and no rough play is permitted.
· In black water, life jackets are non-negotiable for swimming, paddling and dinghy sailing.
· In a swimming pool with clear water, lifejackets are not necessary as long as you are certain the cubs / scouts are strong swimmers and there is an adult or senior scout on watch.
· Confirm that all cubs / scouts are back on land after the end of activities.
If anyone is ever short of lifeguards for an activity, we have good contacts at Linden Lifesaving Club and help can been arranged.
None of us want to go through the trauma currently being experienced by the parents, staff and pupils at those schools

Hi Gareth,
I see you have been getting heart-ace about the same subject I’ve been thinking about over the weekend.
Something I’d like to as:
Do you know if the Buddy-system is specifically documented ANYWHERE in out safety policies, or in the WAC training material?
I now we have references to it, but I cannot recall a single place where the buddy system is documented. i.e. what is it, , how are buddies assigned, how is it used, when is it applied.
I might be mistaken, but I just simply cannot recall seeing this anywhere…

Hi Carl
There is some explanation in module 7, plus it is covered under Traveller in My Scouting Journey.
Always room for improvement though
