Ive been chasing around installing all sorts of different versions of each of the bundles mentioned above and I always end up with a broken installation. The image never builds. I'm running on Ubuntu 20.04LTS and it's NOT a VM. As of right now my MiniZed is just a paperweight and I really want to just build a linux image for it so I can start actually working with it.

As of right now I have the petalinux version 2019.2 and I have the so called supported Minized bsp 2019.2 as well. It will not build. I can embed the log file from the build is requested but for now I just want someone to let me know what versions work.

A key requirement for PetaLinux is to make sure you are using a Supported Operating System. You can find the Supported Operating Systems in the "PetaLinux Tools Documentation Reference Guide UG1144." Here's the version for 2019.2 -- www.xilinx.com/.../ug1144-petalinux-tools-reference-guide.pdf

I believe the PetaLinux build problems you are having is because the Vivado and PetaLinux 2019.2 tools do not support Ubuntu 20.04 LTS. If you need to stick with PetaLinux 2019.2, and want to still use Ubuntu, you will need to change to Ubuntu v16.04.6 or v18.04.2. More details can be found in Chapter 2 of the 2019.2 edition of Xilinx UG1144.

So thanks for your answers. I'll have a look at how I can ensure I have a matching environment. Unfortunately it is obvious this development environment is very VM centric. My network here at slashdevslashnull.org is all Linux based. I keep it all up to date with the latest patches so as to ensure proper security etc...

So my environment is at the latest supported 20.04.4 LTS and I'm not about to downgrade it. If I was using the VM's I could just load one and go. I'll have to check out my options going forward but it would appear that Xlinx FPGA development will be placed on hold for now.

So now I do have an image but it's untested. I'll find the documentation to see how to load the image and also check to see if I built the correct component. I've seen some posts that mention the component should be (after 2020) avnet-image-full.
