Saving all the cut & paste time to get to the point – I was at UF from 73 – 78 (under the 5-year plan) and recall a few great restaurants:

Sonny’s Fat Boy BBQ – South of UF on 13th.

Tony & Pat’s – Italian just North of Sonny’s

The aforementioned Primrose Inn – next to Nichol’s Alley & near The Great Southern Music Hall

Manaro’s – Italian east of town.

Capt. Louie’s – seafood near campus on 13th

Joe’s Deli – near campus, south on 13th

In & Out Hamburgers – somewhere east of campus & finally on Archer Rd.

It’s late, but I’m hungry.

Go Gators!

I'll add the following.

Art's Steak House. Had some sort challenge about eating a huge steak and getting your name/picture on the wall.

Snuffy's. Just remember the burgers being good

Mac's Waffle Shop.

Louie's Hamburgers. Weird little burgers

Royal Castle out by the Interstate.

The original Sonny's on Waldo rd. Believe it was the 1st in the chain. At some point all the meat was smoked at the Waldo rd location and delievered to 13th st. The story at the time was that the city of Gainesville had an ordinance against the smoke.

I wouldn't classify this as a great restaurant, but does anyone remember Little Larry's?

I walked in once. Larry wasn't little at all, at least not his belly. I don't know about the rest of him.

Little Larry’s was an average restaurant for everything but breakfast.  It was great for breakfast.

Also, wasn’t Art’s Steak house replaced by the Brown Derby?  I remember the huge lines waiting to get in—also the attached Love Pub.  I also remember the 24 oz. Prime rib that would feed me or a family of four.

I think everyone needs to go to Louis Lunch, which it says below “holds the title of the oldest restaurant in town”. I had been in and around Gainesville since the 1950s and had never been there until a few years ago.  It once catered to the downtown lunch crowd and is located over near the utility power station just a little SE of downtown.

The main draw for me is the little area with all the memorabilia that dates back to the 1930s, maybe; it has a lot of Gator stuff on the wall.  The burgers are dressed with cole slaw, as I recall.

It is a family run business and I think Louis was 90+ years when he died a couple of years ago.  One of his kids was killed in a robbery there at one time, so be careful; not a great part of town.  Here are a couple of reviews. Really, you need to check this place out and take some pictures before it goes away.

Disappointment...but I'll give it another... -- Jan 30, 2009

. I was rooting for it, but it was just a disappointment.  Everyone says two things about Louis' Lunch: it's cheap and it's good.  It's definitely cheap.  In their defense, we did go pretty early for lunch (about 11:00AM), but the burger was just plain bad.  Very weird texture.  Crunchy on the outside and no discernible taste on the inside.  It was like a bun with crunchy meat crumbles on it.

With that being said, I can't bear to condemn this Gainesville legend.  I hope that I caught it on a bad day, because I seem to be the only person who doesn't like this place.

On another up side, the people are super nice, and the "regulars" make you feel like you're in a small town

Louis's Lunch is an essential part of Gainesville, and holds the title of oldest restaurant in town. It's hidden in an old neighborhood in downtown Gainesville, and unless a friend hadn't taken me there, I would never have found it. Going there is like traveling back in time. The fare is all right, mostly burgers, sandwiches, and hot dogs, but it's worth the trip. Help keep this historic piece of Gainesville alive, and have a decent lunch too.

Asian

·         Dragonfly Sushi, and they are not wrong. Dragonfly has very good food and is a great place to see and be seen. It's a very popular - and pretty expensive - date spot, my

·         Miya Sushi, and when you do, check out the Korean food they have there. It's all good and most of it's way spicy.

·         Saigon Legend is just a quick walk east of campus. It's decidedly not fancy but serves a fine bowl of pho.

·         Taste of Saigon is more upscale and a bit better, but

·         Hanoi Pho is the newest and most authentic.

Pan-Asian

·         Liquid Ginger is upscale but reasonably priced, great for dates.

·         Chopstix is a little greasy these days but does a surprisingly good job with Thai, Vietnamese, Chinese, Malay and more, and you can watch the alligators glide by on Bivens Arm.

·         Bento Cafe has two locations with upscale decor and counter service. I think of Bento more as a lunch place than a dinner one, though, unless I'm looking for a quick bite on the way to the movies on Newberry Road

Mexican

·         La Tienda, and the food is as authentic as any you will find this side of Texas. But don't go there expecting Chi Chi's. This is the real stuff. Nearer to campus,

·         Tortilla Flats. I love the far less authentic burritos at this place

·          Burrito Brothers, but I've never caught that fever.

Indian food

·         it's called "Indian Cuisine," The lunch buffet costs about $12, but you won't be disappointed, especially on Saturdays when they usually have a lamb dish.

Italian

·         Amelia's,

·         Leonardo's 706 and

·         Nero's, but my current favorite is

·         Fresco. It's lame for any critic to admit this, but I'm also partial to - heaven forbid - a chain. I think

·         Carrabba's does an amazing job night after night.

Pizza

·         Satchel's,

·         Blue Highway and

·         Leonardo's 706, but none of them deliver as far as I know. For slices near campus, my pick is I Love

·         N.Y. Pizza rather than Leonardo's by the Slice or even the legendary Italian Gator.

Cuban

·         Virtually Cuban. I like the Ropa Vieja at

·         Fritanga Latin Grill, and the Picadillo at

·         La Familia Last but not least, if you must eat lunch on campus, by far the best and most healthful place for my money is the

·         Arrendondo Room on the 4th floor of the Reitz Union. It is not open at night or on weekends, but it offers a lunch buffet and salad bar for around $8 including drink.

Virtually Cuban co-owner Shawn Nichols lifts the press on a Cuban sandwich in the restaurant's kitchen Monday May 05, 2004.

I know it's against your better judgment because I'm old, the way over 30 sort of old.

I'm so old that if you believe you can't trust anyone over 30, you would have stopped trusting me before you were born.

But you should trust me now anyway, even as I give you some really old school advice - clip this column, or bookmark it, because you're going to want it later.

This is about food, the staff of life, or at least the stuff of life. Sooner or later, and it probably will be sooner, you're going to get tired of all that faux food they serve on campus.

Burger King, Moe's, Wendy's, Taco Bell and Chick-fil-A may seem like heaven now, but it won't take long to get dull. In a week or two, or a month or two for the truly palate dead among you, you'll be looking for a change.

That's when you should pull out this column and follow my instructions very carefully.

Want Chinese food? You won't find much in the way of Chinese in this town. Let me rephrase that. You will find many Chinese restaurants; you just won't find many good ones. Mr. Han's is the exception.

Think Japanese and you will be much happier.

Your friends all will tell you about Dragonfly Sushi, and they are not wrong. Dragonfly has very good food and is a great place to see and be seen. It's a very popular - and pretty expensive - date spot, but my advice is to try Miya Sushi, and when you do, check out the Korean food they have there. It's all good and most of it's way spicy.

We are fairly well blessed here with Vietnamese restaurants. All of them are decent. Saigon Legend is just a quick walk east of campus. It's decidedly not fancy but serves a fine bowl of pho. Taste of Saigon is more upscale and a bit better, but Hanoi Pho is the newest and most authentic.

pan-Asian food, there are at least three good choices. Liquid Ginger is upscale but reasonably priced, great for dates. Chopstix is a little greasy these days but does a surprisingly good job with Thai, Vietnamese, Chinese, Malay and more, and you can watch the alligators glide by on Bivens Arm. Bento Cafe has two locations with upscale decor and counter service. I think of Bento more as a lunch place than a dinner one, though, unless I'm looking for a quick bite on the way to the movies on Newberry Road.

Mexican? For my money, there is only one Mexican restaurant in Gainesville. It's called La Tienda, and the food is as authentic as any you will find this side of Texas. But don't go there expecting Chi Chi's. This is the real stuff. Nearer to campus, I love the far less authentic burritos at Tortilla Flats. Other people (and probably your Gator parents, uncles, aunts and grandparents) swear by Burrito Brothers, but I've never caught that fever.

Indian food? We don't have a lot of Indian restaurants in Gainesville, but we do have one worth visiting. Conveniently enough, it's called "Indian Cuisine," which I will readily agree is not the most creative name for a restaurant.

The lunch buffet costs about $12, but you won't be disappointed, especially on Saturdays when they usually have a lamb dish. The best bet, though, is to order from the menu at dinnertime.

Italian? That's a tougher proposition. We have some good Italian restaurants such as Amelia's, Leonardo's 706 and Nero's, but my current favorite is Fresco. It's lame for any critic to admit this, but I'm also partial to - heaven forbid - a chain. I think Carrabba's does an amazing job night after night.

Pizza? You'll have to decide for yourself among the zillions of student-oriented, "bargain" pizza-delivery joints. But when you want real pizza, consider Satchel's, Blue Highway and Leonardo's 706, but none of them deliver as far as I know. For slices near campus, my pick is I Love N.Y. Pizza rather than Leonardo's by the Slice or even the legendary Italian Gator.

Cuban? It depends. My favorite Cuban sandwich is the Havana Cuban at Virtually Cuban. I like the Ropa Vieja at Fritanga Latin Grill, and the Picadillo at La Familia.

Last but not least, if you must eat lunch on campus, by far the best and most healthful place for my money is the Arrendondo Room on the 4th floor of the Reitz Union.

It is not open at night or on weekends, but it offers a lunch buffet and salad bar for around $8 including drink.

Is anyone else old enough to recall enjoying Art's Steak House on SW 13th just before getting to Payne's Prairie?

BTW, David, no part of Archer Road is East of the UF campus.  I do not recall the In and Out burger place.

I do remember Lums with those hot dogs steamed in beer. Supposedly there is only one Lums left in the entire country, down in Davie.

The Original In and Out was located on the east side headed toward Hawthorne. They later opened one on 13th st somewhere around where Skeeters was located. The original was still opened around 2003-4 but looked like it was on it's last legs.

I had completely forgotten Larry's Lunch but had many good breakfasts there.

One place I've never been is the old lunch counter/ soda shop located inside Wise? Drugs. Don't know how I missed that one.

Anyone remember the Mad Monks Inn on 5th ave, just off of 13th st, a couple of blocks north of University?  I can not vouch for how great the food was, but I enjoyed it as a child.  Especially the spaghetti and meat balls.  I have the menu here, and I am amazed at the prices.  Spaghetti and Meatballs for 2.50, which included tossed salad and garlic bread.  Be gentle with the memories, my parents opened the place so it has good memories, but we sold and moved away when I was young still.

Lillian's Music Store was a nice bar I remember in downtown Gainesville.

Don't know if it's still there.

And I remember spending nights drinking at The Red Lion. And I really spent many nights drinking at Nellie's Raw Bar, on 13th Street, downstairs from Wuv's, IIRC. Nellies's had pitchers for $1.25 during Happy Hour. The stench of the grease they used for their french fries hung in the air and clung to your clothing. If I had trouble the next day remembering where I had gone, the smell from my clothes always gave it away. The place was so dumpy, we used to call it Nellie's Low Bar.

How about Nellie's which later became Cassidy's pizza?? Nellie's was a

Yes. I believe you're right. If Nellie's caught fire, they would just
have to watch it burn. The carpet was saturated with oil, as was
everything else in the place. There's something special about eating
wings with your date and watching German cockroaches crawl on the walls.
Since I'm striking out on the OE and Tail Gator, how about the place in
the 34th St. shopping center. What was it....Ashley's pub?? Fine college
style Mexican and big margaritas. Next door was the Chinese joint owned
by Genia Himes, never ate there, but she was the shadow owner of OE.
Across Archer was some wing joint by the Winn Dixie...CJ's?? A major
frat hangout. I think they hosed it down every night to wash out the
puke smell. It was awful.

frat hangout. I think they hosed it down every night to wash out the

puke smell. It was awful.

Ashley's was the mexican restaurant with the giant margaritas. Unfortunately, mostly ice.

Calico Jack's (CJ's) was indeed across the street. Pablo's Tunnel was out front.

Too many CJ's stories to tell at once.

Here's one:

Following a big game, Auburn perhaps, we arrived at CJ's without leaving the game early, and faced a line that stretched all the way back to the grocery store. Nonplussed, my friend and I went into the grocery store, bought a case of Budweiser, and took our place in line.

We cracked a couple Buds and boy did they taste good on a hot Saturday afternoon. Since there was no way the two of us could kill the entire case - even if the wait was 45 minutes - the people around us were bold enough to ask if they could have beers as well.

"Of course," we said. However, if the person was in front of us, he would have to agree to swap places in line with us.

By the time we finished our first beer, the case had been handed out, and we found ourselves first in line.

Yes. We ate at Art's every Homecoming weekend. It was bought out by the Brown Derby and is now the private arabic school in Gainesville. It is where Steve Martin got the entire bar to hide in the median while he hitchhiked at closing time. Everyone rushed any driver who stopped. My ex-brother-in-law told me about doing that long before we heard about it from any other source.

Louis' Lunch has the best onion rings in town, but are frequently sold out on Mondays (after the weekend). I've been eating there for over 10 years and have not seen coleslaw on the burgers. The burgers are fried in an iron skillet in Lawry's Seasoned Salt.

Go Gators!

Ashley's closed last year. We ate at Genia Himes' restaurant a lot as newlyweds. Them she got the frozen food contract (was it with Betty Crocker?) and the restaurant went downhill.
