This app uses map data from OpenStreetMap to read road information and traffic sign data, then announces it to the driver by voice. The app is primarily designed for voice notifications. The screen mainly displays a log showing the status of information being received. It also shows the speed limit, your current driving speed, and your current GPS coordinates. Since this is an app made by  “Gatolabo,” there is basically nothing for the user to operate manually. The app speaks in eight languages depending on the device’s display language settings.

The amount of information available in OpenStreetMap varies greatly by location. In many areas, speed limits and traffic signs have not been fully mapped yet. When driving in such places, the app may provide very little information other than your speed and direction. Because OpenStreetMap allows users to edit map data themselves, you can improve the map coverage in your own city or places you frequently visit by adding missing information.

When used on Android car head units, voice interruptions may not work properly on older devices with unusual audio focus limitations. In such cases, this app will be almost useless because it cannot provide voice guidance while driving. On newer and more powerful Android car head units, music playback, navigation guidance from another navigation app, and this app’s voice notifications can all work simultaneously. Using the app on such devices is strongly recommended.

This app is being developed with the goal of official Android Auto support. Because apps for Android Auto must pass a strict review process, it is unclear whether this goal can be achieved. However, as of the internal test version 1.4, voice guidance is already working through car speakers. (The screen display was still showing an error.)

OpenStreetMapの地図データを使って道路の情報・標識の情報を読み取り、それをドライバーに音声で通知します。このアプリは音声で情報を音声で通知することがメインであり、画面は情報の取得状況をログとして表示します。他に、制限速度と現在の走行速度、現在地の座標も表示します。 「がとらぼ」の人が作るアプリなのでユーザーが操作するものはありません。 デバイスの表示言語に応じて8カ国語で喋ります。

 OpenStreetMapは場所によって登録されている情報の充実度が異なり、多くの場所では制限速度や交通標識が登録されていません。このような場所を走行した場合には、走行速度や方位以外の情報は殆ど得られないかもしれません。OpenStreetMapは利用者が地図情報を編集することができるので、ご自身の住む街や行くことの多い街の地図の情報を登録してご自身で地図を充実したものにすることができます。

 車載Androidヘッドユニットで使用する場合、オーディオフォーカスに特殊な制限のある古いデバイスでは音声の割り込みが機能しないことがあります。この場合は、走行中の音声案内ができないためこのアプリは全く役に立たないでしょう。 最近の高性能な車載Androidヘッドユニットでは音楽再生と別のナビアプリの案内とこのアプリの音声案内が全て機能します。そのようなデバイスでの使用を推奨します。 

このアプリは正式なAndroid Auto対応を目指して開発しています。Android Auto対応アプリは審査が厳しいため達成できるかは不明ですが、内部テストのVer.1.4時点で車載スピーカーで案内ができるようになっています。(画面表示はエラーでした)
