Hi All,

Just played with Zoho Creator (http://creator.zoho.com/) which is a *VERY* light weight web app that seems perfect as a baseline type application for GATHER to author XForms and view the results.  Has anyone seen/used similar tools?  Seen anything in the open source world that might be similar?

Thanks,

Jonathan

Hi Jon

That is a very cool application! I played with it a bit and it works really well! I'd love to see their data model. It seems like they create a table per form to store the data in and must also have meta-database to store all the forms themselves in. Probably not too dissimilar to what OpenMRS have.

I see they also have an API that you can use to manipulate the data once you have created  an application.

I haven't seen anything like this in the OS arena :(

Hey Jon,

Was talking to a colleague here, Yaw Anokwa, who's working on all this
too (think he just joined the GATHER list). He suggested a few others:

http://dabbledb.com/
http://www.editgrid.com/
http://www.coghead.com/
http://wufoo.com/
http://www.blist.com/
http://www.filemaker.com/products/bento/

I imagine you've looked at most or all of these, and no idea if any of
them author XForms or not, but all sort of exist in the
online-and-easier-than-excel/access space.

Hi All,

Following on from the impressive apps below, i scowered the net for OS
equivalents (not so successfully) - but did come across a list of open
source survey tools:
http://www.gesis.org/en/methods_consultation/data_collection/Onlinesurveys/software.htm

Most notable of which would be www.limesurvey.org - i imagine GATHER
would have a fair amount of its features, although I'm not too fond of
its interface.

Best,
Kieran

Limesurvey looks like a good idea, but I agree that the actual surveys
don't have the best interface. What I'm most curious about with any of
these online tools is whether they provide an API for getting at the
data. I'd be happy to include support for ingesting data captured
through any front-end.

Thanks for bringing these to our attention.

Hi Andreas,

I think that some of the proprietary tools (like Zoho DB creator) do
provide an API, but I haven't seen this on any of the opensource tools
I've checked out - they manly just do csv export. If it could help with
a prototype we could perhaps try to add something to Limesurvey - but
what would you require from the API?

Best,
Kieran
