GATHER machine images

In an effort to simplify the deployment, install and update of GATHER,
I've been developing the specification for a virtual machine using the
Conary package system. With Conary, everything from the OS kernel to
your application gets resolved in a giant dependency tree, specifying
the exact pieces needed to run your software. When the spec is
complete, I'll be able to generate VMware, Amazon EC2, or DVD install
images on demand. One of many benefits is that the images will include
a management interface for monitoring and installing software updates.

This will be the basis of the initial demo install of the GATHER
software. I'll generate and deploy a virtual machine with the starter
kit elements, which will be available at an address like http://demo.gatherdata.org
.
