Getting Started Programming Android 4.0
My, how far Android has come!
Just three years ago, the Apple iPhone had 35%+ market share and
Android had <1%. Today, Android devices dominate the smartphone
market, overtaking iPhone by a significant margin. Certainly the race
is still on, but my bet is on the platform with
- With the most popular open source operating system (Linux)
- With an application stack that includes de factor standard
technologies (like Flash)
- Using one of the most popular industry standard languages (Java)
- Where applications can be developed on any brand of computer you
choose (not just theirs)
- Allowing the targeting of devices manufactured by many
manufacturers (not just theirs)
- Allowing cellular access on any carrier's network (not just the few
they pick for you)
See the Nielson blog for the complete article showing the race is
still on)
If you've attended any of the Gateway JUG Android Group Study classes,
you watched as Android went from a 1.x to a 2.x product. But what's
been happening since? A lot!
This presentation will cover Android 4.0 highlights and will walk you
through what you need to get started programming Android 4.0. (Hint:
You don't even need an Android device capable of supporting Android
4.0 to begin exploring its features.)
In this presentation, I'll cover
A little history on Android
Android 4.0 Highlights
The Android Platform
The Android Programming Model
Installing the tools
Writing your first Android app - the canonical Hello World app
Writing an Android 4.0 app
