PHONEME is a three-day series of concerts exhibiting some of the
world's most innovative practitioners of electro-acoustic music.
Featuring the BSC (Bhob Rainey, Greg Kelley, James Coleman, Liz Tonne,
Mike Bullock, Chris Cooper, Vic Rawlings, and Howard Stelzer) and
various member projects (including Nmperign), each night will
highlight a different element of the range and diversity of the
ensemble and its individuals. In addition to three distinct
performances by the BSC, PHONEME will also feature each member of the
ensemble in a world premiere collaboration with Philadelphia-based
performers.
THE BSC
Led by Bhob Rainey, one of the most celebrated improvisers working
today, the BSC comprises eight members who represent some of the
world's finest electro-acoustic musicians. The BSC generates
consistently fresh and compelling work through innovative rehearsal
techniques and long-standing musical collaborations between individual
members of the group. The BSC has been a mainstay at New England
Conservatory's SICPP festival for the past three years and was
recently awarded a summer residency by Boston concert moguls
Non-Event.
THE FESTIVAL
This year, the Philadelphia Live Arts Festival and Philly Fringe will
take place in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania from the 31st of August
through the 15th of September. The Philadelphia Live Arts Festival and
Philly Fringe were originally founded in 1997 as the Philadelphia
Fringe Festival. The Live Arts Festival features cutting-edge
performing arts events created by some of the most renowned
contemporary artists from our region and around the world. The Philly
Fringe provides opportunities for any artist, independent of a
selection process, to self-produce his or her work, in the tradition
of the international Fringe movement. In 2006, on our tenth
anniversary, the Live Arts and Fringe festivals featured works from
more than 1,485 participating artists, attracted nearly 45,000
attendees and grossed more money in ticket sales than ever before.
Since our inception in 1997, the Live Arts and Philly Fringe have
presented and facilitated the work of over 1,500 performance groups.
Our goal is to construct a cultural center where artists on the
cutting-edge of their craft can present their work, exchange creative
energies and ideas, and share their artistic visions with audiences
and the international arts community.
