STEPS TO APPLY FOR U.S. NON IMMIGRANT VISA IN INDIA
Step 1 : |
Individuals intending to travel to United States temporarily need to secure a U.S. Nonimmigrant visa specific to their purpose of travel. Therefore, anyone who is planning to apply for U.S. Visa should be clear on their purpose of travel. You may view the visa options available on this website by clicking on ‘Nonimmigrant Visas’ under the ‘All About Visas’ link. VFS is here to assist and help you through the entire visa application process, but cannot advise or guide you on choosing a visa category.
Step 2 : |
Please view the ‘Nonimmigrant Visas ’ link of ‘All About Visas ’ to check (i) the earliest available interview date before you pay any fees and (ii) the Consular jurisdiction under which you may apply. You should also thoroughly review the link to understand the guidelines for completing the DS-160 application form and to know which documents are required for the interview.
Step 3 : |
Pay the visa fee and VFS service charges at any of the designated HDFC bank branches in India. You will need to submit a clear photocopy of the first page (biopage) of your current passport to the bank when making your payment. The bank will issue you multiple copies of a visa fee receipt with a 10 digit barcode number. You will need the HDFC fee receipt barcode number to schedule your interview appointment. Please note, you are required to wait 24 hours from the date of purchase of your visa fee receipt before you can use it to schedule your interview appointment.
Step 4 : |
Click the ‘Application form DS-160 ’ link on this website. You will see the instructions for the form DS-160, and then you will proceed to the Department of State website to fill out your visa application form. Please make sure you know your consular jurisdiction and that you have saved a picture on your computer that meets the requirements. After you have completed the DS-160, you will print a confirmation page, which will have a barcode (known as the “CEAC barcode”). You will need this barcode, in addition to the HDFC fee receipt barcode, to confirm your visa interview appointment through this website.
Step 5 : |
Return to this website and click on the ‘All about Appointments’ link to ‘Schedule appointment’ for an interview based on your purpose of travel. Once you have confirmed the interview appointment, you should download and print the appointment letter.
Step 6 : |
Only applicants that are scheduled for an interview appointment at the U.S. Consulate Mumbai are required to submit their application packet to the VFS U.S. Visa Application Centre in Mumbai, Ahmedabad, or Pune at least 3 working days in advance of their interview date. You can view the documents required for submission under ‘Nonimmigrant Visas’ for your specific purpose of travel. We recommend that you submit your application packet well in advance of your scheduled interview appointment date. If you scheduled an interview appointment at any consular post other than Mumbai, do not follow step 6.
Step 7 : |
Report to the U.S. Embassy or U.S. Consulate where your interview has been scheduled at least 15 minutes prior to the scheduled appointment time along with all the required documents. Please ensure you carry all mandatory documents as listed under ‘All About Visas.’ The documents are specific to your purpose of travel.
Step 8 : |
If your visa is approved, your passport will be returned back to you via courier to the address you specified when scheduling your appointment. You may also collect it personally across the VFS counter in the city where you were interviewed. You can track the passport delivery on the home page of our website.
Step 9 : |
We strongly recommend you review the ‘Security Regulation’ to be followed at the U.S Embassy, U.S Consulates, and the VFS centres to avoid inconveniences |
