This message for new gate 2013 group students only . This message sent for us last year by our guru ravi sir after gate 2012 exam.

 but this message should read before gate 2013 exam , thats why i am posting here and  gate group on behalf of ravi sir ....  

Dear all,

       I believe that you all have done well in GATE. Whatever your score is, we cannot predict the ranks now. Don't worry about the mistakes you did, because things won't get better by worrying about them :)  instead of worrying about past, please keep yourself busy, working for your future :) Since, all of you are from CS, you need to learn coding. Whether, you do Masters or not, you will finally end up writing code and your growth in industry will depend solely on your  programming skills. Degrees can help you only in the beginning of your careers. Now you have lot of time(till August) to learn programming. 

 

                           By preparing for Gate, you must have learnt all the theory, but reading theory doesn't help you to become good hackers. Industry will not hire you, if you know algorithms but couldn't implement them. It is as good as not knowing the algorithms at all. Now, ask yourself, "How many lines of code I wrote till now? What is the biggest program I wrote till now?" , you can understand where you stand. 

 

             "What is the best way to learn programming? "

 

                             May be you could compare programming to swimming or driving. Do you think that we can learn swimming or driving by reading about them?

So, you know the solution, the best way to learn programming is to write programs. Start with few lines and build projects spanning thousands of lines.

 

             "Thousands of lines???". " How much motivation do we need to write thousands of lines? "

 

                              The motivation just enough to sit and start the first line. Once you start it, you will enjoy it and you will start having fun and fun is motivating. A rocket uses half of its total fuel just to lift itself few feet off the ground and the remaining half to reach the skies. Good things will always be difficult in the beginning. If you can overcome the resistance and fear, you can master it.

 

            " How can someone become a master in some field? "

 

                            Recent studies have shown that, in order to become a "master" or "best in the world" in any field, we need to put 10,000 hours in it. Whether you put these hours in four years or ten years or more, doesn't matter. If you can work in a field for 10,000 focused hours, you will be the master in that field.

 

             "How can we put 10,000 hours on one thing?"

           

               I think that we need three things in order to achieve anything.

               

                1) We should have desire to achieve it.

                2) We should believe that we can achieve it.

                3) We should enjoy the path, trying to achieve it.

 

     Without any of the above three things, we cannot invest 10,000 hours on one field. I often hear many people say that they are not having the talent or brains to achieve something. But, it is not the talent or brains, it is that they are not having one of the above three points. Talents, brains, gods or stars has nothing to do here. It is purely the number of focused hoursyou invested. Take Sachin, the god of cricket, as people call him. How could he master the field so well? It is the 10,000 hours. He is not gifted or genius. He has the desire to become the best batsman in the world, he believed that he could become one and he enjoyed the path trying to become one.  He has all the three qualities and so he is able to put in 10,000 hourson cricket.

 

                      So, now you know the reason why you may or may not get Gate rank. If you have had invested at least 1000 hours on Gate last year, you would definitely get a good rank. So, don't blame yours brains, gods, stars or faculty( we did our best).   

 

                     Choose the field and count the hours. The one short cut to finish those 10000hours early is to start early. Work like a slave but live like a king.
