Our first week of bowling is this Wednesday, August 28th.  Practice starts at 7:00.  We will have a brief Captain's meeting at 7:15, followed by the National Anthem, and then bowling will begin.

The captain's meeting is required because one team is asking to allow a female bowler on their team. We simply need a vote to confirm this is OK.

We still have openings for individuals (both part-time and full time) on the league.  We may also have an opening for another full team.  If you know of anyone who would like to join the league, please let me or the folks at Raymond's know, and we'll get in touch with them.

A few other reminders:
* Weekly fees are $20; however, for the first three weeks, we ask each bowler to bring $40.  The first week's extra $20 is for sanction fees.  All bowlers must pay their sanction fee this week to be allowed to bowl.
* On a related note, Raymond's is part of the Lake County BA.  Any bowler who is in another league in Lake County and has already sanctioned must fill out a card, but does not owe any dues.  Any bowler who is in another league that's not part of Lake County will owe $10.
* If you have a bowler who bowls left handed, please have that bowler write "left handed" on the receipt portion of their sanction card.  We are being asked to track right-handed and left-handed bowlers this year.  We only need to do this once.
* If you did not receive the email from me with the schedule and rules, please let me know and I'll send you another copy.  Many people said their copy went to their "spam" folder.

* If you or a bowler on your team is paying the full season by check the first week ($720), please make the check to "Wednesday Night Men".  Otherwise, please make all checks payable to "Raymond's Bowl". (This is at the request of Raymond's.)

So apparently Wednesday Night Men isn’t descriptive enough for some teams. The problem with allowing that is then you open the door for others, and then it becomes a mixed league.

The first week he bowls he''ll need the $20 bowling fee but also the $20 sanction fee. We''ll want to add him to the roster on our first night and I believe Kovarik needs a sub on maybe the 11th. Also B. Riley might need off soon to de-stress or go to a tu- the fitting.......

A Typical Lineup

In most cases, the best bowler on your team should bowl fifth. Your next best bowler should bowl fourth. Your third best bowler should bowl first. Your fourth best should bowl third, and your bowler with the lowest average should bowl second. See the table below for a less confusing explanation of this lineup.

First Position

This is your lead-off bowler. This person gets you started every week and is, at minimum, an adequate bowler. As the first bowler, he can set the tone for the night by instilling confidence in his teammates or intimidating their opponents. Typically, his average is the third highest on the team and is trusted to lead off because of his ability to consistently bowl strikes or, when he doesn’t throw strikes, pick up spares.

The best first bowler is someone who doesn’t leave a lot of open frames and can get each night started with a strike or spare, setting his entire team on the right track.

Second Position

The second bowler is typically the least experienced or simply the bowler with the lowest average. Bowling second puts as little pressure as possible on this bowler, as he can rely on his teammates to pick up the bulk of the scores.

This can be a valuable spot in the lineup, as a lot of bowlers in the second position struggle with consistency, leaving a bowler who can consistently bowl at or above his average open to win a lot of games and points for his team.

Third Position

Much like the second position, this bowler will likely have less experience (or merely a lower average) than his teammates, and his spot in the middle of the lineup takes a lot of pressure off him.

Also like the second position, this can be a valuable spot in the lineup if your third bowler can consistently improve over the course of the season.

Fourth Position

Commonly referred to as the set-up man, this guy can bowl in the clutch, regularly throw a hooks tenth and could likely be an anchor if necessary. The set-up man should not leave a lot of frames open, picking up strikes or spares almost every frame.

The best set-up man is someone who can perform well no matter how the third bowler is doing, setting up the anchor to close out the victory.

Fifth Position

The anchor is generally the best bowler on the team. When you need a strike, or series of strikes, at the end of the night, which team member do you trust the most to do it? It should be this guy.

The best anchors are not only good bowlers statistically, but can perform well under pressure and in competitive environments. This is important as they’ll be bowling against the other teams’ top bowlers every week.

I’m pretty sure we suck because we aren’t bowling up to our potential while other teams are. Almost all of us are under average for the year so far compared to last year and our point winning percentage is horribad. It also hasn’t helped that we’ve had several 250+ games bowled against us already.
