Indian cinema is full of male-led action movies where ultra-masculine characters fight against crime and injustice while juggling with explosives in slow motion. However, there is a dearth of female action heroes and every time such a movie is released, we cannot help but watch it with fixated eyes. We could all agree that there's a touch of decision-driven refinement in action female-led movies that makes the films gripping.

If you're in the mood to watch action female-led movies for a change, check out the list below for the biggest female-led Bollywood thrillers. Over the years, some wonderful stories with thoughtfully created female heroes have graced our screens and it's always a delight to watch these movies. Check out the renowned titles on our list!

Released in 2012, Kahaani is one of the finest mysteries in Bollywood that has the talented Vidya Balan as its lead character. The movie narrates the story of a heavily pregnant lady who lies from London to Kolkata to look for her missing husband. Directed by Sujoy Ghosh, Kahaani is one of the first movies we think of in the list of female lead action movies. Kahaani is a must-watch for everyone who loves unpredictable and jaw-dropping plot twists and dramatic changes of events in movies.

Directed by Navneet Singh, NH10 is a critically acclaimed Bollywood thriller starring Anushka Sharma and Neil Bhoopalam. Anushka and Neil play the characters of Meera and Arjun, a couple who find themselves being witnesses to a horrific murder on a road trip. The Anushka Sharma movie NH10 then takes us on a thrilling ride of how the gangster involved in the murder chases this couple. This Anushka Sharma movie NH 10 is rather gory and filled with endless action series, so get ready for a riveting watch!

But there came a certain movie that proved to be different. Mardaani. Directed by Pradeep Sarkar under Yash Raj Films production this movie was released in the year 2014. The storyline revolves around a dedicated and courageous female cop Shivani Shivaji Roy who busts the crime cartel of child trafficking and drugs run by a Delhi based Kingpin Karan Rastogi.

Director Sarkar had done a brilliant job by showcasing the female protagonist Shivani throughout the movie unlike most Bollywood entertainment movies which are more inclined to portray a woman as a damsel in distress. The director had packed all such characters off the bay, and had depicted Shivani as a powerhouse who is not only a police officer but equally deals with her other roles where she is a foster mother to her niece and a wife to her doctor husband.

Giving it a feminist angle, I say the usual Bollywood stereotypes focuses on a hero fighting the pitfalls of the system. And when the corrupt system throws him out of power he takes matter in his own hand and decides to carry on his job, and ultimately emerge as a winner. Mardaani is also a typical Bollywood style crime thriller only the gender has been reversed. In place of He it is She.

She also says generations after generations and films after films we the common masses had clapped when the male protagonist took up challenges to save the downtrodden, to protect the honor of his spouse, mother, sister and daughter.

As pointed out by Sanjukta on this criticism, if the title Mardaani itself is self defeating she says there is certainly no need for a woman to be strong like a man because the woman can choose to be anything she wants. She can be a pregnant woman using her brains to find out the killer of her husband (Kahaani, 2012), a virgin dumped on her wedding day when she decides going for her honeymoon all alone to explore the world (Queen, 2014) or can be a foul mouthed expletive uttering muscle flexing sexist joke making her a tough cop who can slap the shit out of the goons as has been showed in Mardaani. And we should respect all women without slut shaming and also discard our parochial mentality towards us women.

Hi,
I am writing to you with great difficulty that I have seen all the movies played by shemaroo entertainment ltd. Some of the movies are related to real life incidents. Such movies should not be liable to real life consequences. Or decisions. Govt is very good and kind. They wont entertain such movies. It might have worst consequences on children. They could follow on the same idea and start behaving like an inspector. Then that child could be thrown out of the house due to dire consequences or not acting normal. Medical tensions could increase. High blood pressure could be a result also. Heart problems fear could be a result. In such cases, please delete the ghajini movie made long back from youtube. I want you to initiate this good cause by deleting ghajini movie from youtube. Then watch out for the rest of them. Slowly and steadily, the consequences will follow.
Since I will not be there to see this good cause, I want you to start the proceedings now. By deleting ghajini and all its romanti songs, we will initiate the good cause.
Bye

There was a time when Big Banner movies never launched their daughter nor let them essay any role in Bollywood Masala Movies.. after 5 decades, YRF breaks that stereotype to make a film of supercop who is daughter in law of founder... which doesnot make hypocrite giving lesson on women empowerment

The director #GopiPuthran has made movie thriller gripping & fast paced. The movie doesnot have any song, which cuts down the movie length by 30 minutes to 1.45Hrs, almost like any hollywood movie. Although there was space for 1 or 2 dance number songs.

The scene where #RaniMukerji faces media in TV show & silences tough TV anchor is the fact of India. Another scene where SP whips villain on road brutally, is probably demand of todays time, what rapist should get public humiliation.

Before invaders plundered 1500 years ago, india was socially, spiritually & economically powerful. As mothers & sister were disrespected, wealth looted and kingdom failed to protect their subject, the open society started to adopt change to be a fearful & a closed culture. People traded their imaan(faith, belief, honesty, truth etc) to survive or grow evily or unethically.

From Equal rights, over centuries women were left with no rights or few rights. This change of psychology was to protect, whicb must change now, as we are independent country, 5th largest economy of world. We need to educate equally.

The government has to be unbiased and have strong laws and less politically driven on caste & religion. Politician will never let, people to get educated or grow, as they feel that they will lose their votes & influencing power.

Wow! You are a great writer! Totally agree on your views about the daily reality women face everyday of their life. This film does a stand up job of portraying this issue without the extra bollywood fluff, aka, super strength, over the top action sequences etc, like they have done in other police based films.

This is obvious as Liam Neeson wasn`t almost raped in the climax of `Taken`. (How interesting would it have been if he was though. Imagine this conversation on mainstream Hollywood movie sites.) I was initially surprised by the amazing phone conversations between Mukherji and the antagonist, until I realize that it`s an attempt to re-create the, now meme-worthy, scene of Neeson threatening his daugther`s captors. But the plot of daughter (figure) getting abducted, then groomed, drugged and moulder into being an play thing as part of a sophisticated sex trafficking ring for influencial clientelle is pretty much bang on.

I`m glad you liked this movie, as a lot of people complained that Mukherji`s role is just that of a man, with a women stepping into it. While I kind of agree, I don`t think that`s necessarily a bad thing. The thing that makes me wary of this feminism debate, is that sometimes I find that the rare instances that some progressive things do happen, are overshadowed as being `not enough`. But isn`t any change or forward movement a good thing? Similarly, while you find Mukherji`s depiction as a woman in this role to be reflective of how all women have to shrug off emotional attacks and function in their daliy lives, I see the opposite, but in a complimenting way. The fact that the supporting actors (not counting the antagonists, because they have to be assholes) don`t reference or acknowledge that fact that she`s a woman police officer in charge, etc, to me is awesome. And to the point, even the villain didn`t talk down to her simply because she`s a woman, but spoke to her with the same level of respect + hero/villain dynamic that would be extended to a male protagonist.

In certain situations, we can`t achieve equality if the differences are always being distinguished to the point of paralysis. And this holds true a lot more in occupations such as law enforcement. You can accomodate between a man and woman till you win elections, but if that accomodation gets someone killed, then what`s the point? So Mukherji being completely masculine (while not becoming a joke) in the sense that she`s doing things that are usually associated with men in Bollywood movies as action `heroes`, and no one in the movie is drawing attention to that, is commendable.
