Helen Atthowe, Biodesign Farm, Stevensville, MT Workshop #1: FOREST GARDEN/FOREST FARM - SUCCESSES AND CHALLENGES. Examples from 3 forest gardens and one commercial farm designed to enhance plant and spatial diversity, utilize woody perennials, minimize tillage, encourage soil nutrient cycling and, provide above/below ground biological pest management. Workshop #2: Designing a low cost, efficient energy, water, and food system in western Montana. Masanobu Fukuoka asked, "what less can we do?". After farming eco-organically for 30 years, I am finally learning how to DO this philosophy in my garden, my solar electric and water system. Bio: Helen Atthowe has been farming on her own in the Bitterroot Valley and consulting for other organic vegetable and fruit farms for 25 years.

Sergei Boutenko, Wild Edibles with Sergei Boutenko, Ashland OR Workshop #1: Join author, Segei Boutenko for a fun and informative lecture about eating MORE greens and wild edibles. Learn quick and delicious ways to introduce greens food into your life, attain the skill and confidence necessary to start foraging for wild edibles, and much, much more! Bio: In 1998, when Sergei was 13 years old, his parents took him and his sister to hike the entire Pacific Crest Trail spanning 2,650 miles from Mexico to Canada. During their hike the Boutenkos ran into food shortages and were compelled to learn how to harvest edible plants from the wild. Eating a diet rich in wild edibles for six months greatly improved their health and helped them to successfully complete their adventure. Joanna Castro and Yura Kazantsev, Vedrica Forest Gardens, Weippe, ID Workshop #1: This workshop pulls from various traditions and knowledge including The Ringing Cedars Series, the Dagara people, Jean Leidloff and more. During our time together, we will share our experiences of community and what we view as best practices. We will discuss a model of societal change that offers hope and beauty in human-to-human and human-to-earth ecology relationships. The workshop is held using facilitated Council and is an interactice experience. We are creating social permaculture, growing people. Joanna Castro is a Mama, a partner, a co-creator, a visionary and a change agent. She is trained in the professional field as a Mental Health Counselor. She is the co-founder of Vedrica Forest Gardens, as well as a member of The Circle of Dreams.

Jill Davies, Sustainable Living Systems, Victor, MT Workshop #1: 1. The philosophy of community land ownership. 2. Describing what a Community Land Trust (CLT) is and why it is the model to use – difference between CLT and our conservation easement land trusts. 3. How to create a CLT. 4. Some examples. Bio: Jill Davies is farmer and pure food activist living in the Bitterroot Valley of western Montana. She speaks and writes on current trends in the production of foods with a focus on organic agriculture and seed saving and is actively opposed to gmo’s. In 2003 she initiated and was the first coordinator of the Montana Organic Association. Gloria recently co-authored a report on how Montana can become energy self-reliant through renewable energy, energy efficiency and conservation. She serves on the Montana Climate Change Advisory Committee and works throughout the U.S. with the Center for Climate Strategies in assisting states develop climate change action plans.

The workshop will also discuss the new creation of (CASA) Council of Sustainable Settlements of the Americas in Colombia, South America. Bio: Jason Gutzmer has been working in the ecovillage and permaculture movement, serving as a bridge person throughout the Americas since 1995. He is co-founder of the mobile ecovillage La Caravana Arcoiris Por La Paz, serving as an outreach tool for sustainability and Earth restoration in 17 countries and is the co-founder of Sundog Ecovillage near Missoula MT. Bio: Penelope Baquero is a co-founder of Sundog Ecovillage and is a representative of the Ecovillage Network of the Americas (EVA) and ambassador of the Council of Sustainable Settlements of the Americas. Richard Kuhnel, Sandpoint Transition Initiative, Sandpoint, ID Bio: Richard is an integrative ecosocial designer and works on a diverse range of projects. He is teaching Permaculture workshops. In January 2008 he participated in a Transition Training workshop in Totnes in the UK. After returning to the US he co-founded the Sandpoint Transition Initiative, well known in the Transition Movement for its early successful adoption of the transition model. Julie, Kim and Kelly Pagliaro, Kamiah Permaculture, Kamiah, ID Bio: Bio: Kim, Julie and Kelly Pagliaro are a family of 2008 permaculture design course graduates taught by Bill Mollison and Geoff Lawton in Melbourne, Australia. Inspired by this experience, the Pagliaro family has established Kamiah Permaculture and FNA Ranch, a 44 acre permaculture demonstration farm where they teach permaculture.

Michael Pilarski, Friends of the Trees, Tonasket, WA Workshop #1. Okanogan Biodiversity Farm: A case study in farm production utilizing permaculture and agroforestry. Expenses and income over the years. Production-oriented permaculture. Small-scale, two acres. Michael has been establishing agroforestry plantings since 1986. A major focus is getting good productivity starting in year one and every year thereafter. Crops change as the system evolves. Vegetables, berries, medicinal herbs, seed crops, shrubs, trees and vines are all used. All stages of succession can be planted at once. After the first year or two, no tillage equipment is used in thelanting, only hand tools. This presentation will focus on his recent 5-year planting. Bio: Michael Pilarski has been teaching, writing and networking for permaculture since 1981. He is active in the Inland and Maritime Northwest. His specialties include plants, wildcrafting, ethnobotany, forestry, agroforestry, herbs and deep nature connection.
David Ronniger, Native Seeds Foundation, Hot Springs, MT and Michael Pilarski, Friends of the Trees Society, Hot Springs, MT Workshop #1. Using native plants in permaculture systems and for ecosystem restoration. We will talk about how to collect and process native seeds as well as some vegetative propagation methods. Bio: David Ronniger has processed and sold many tons of native seeds over the years through his company Native Seeds Foundation. Ronniger and Pilarski got their starts in the seed business by working together in 1978 and both have long careers in the seed industry. David is also famous as the founder of the famous seed potato business, Ronniger’s Potatoes.
Alison Rooney Bio: Allison Rooney is the diligent head farmer of Cloud Nine Farm, just outside of Wilsall, Montana. Cloud Nine Farm is a biodiverse family farm practicing Permaculture and growing vegetables, herbs, fruits, and plants 34 miles Northeast of Bozeman, Montana near the ranching community of Wilsall. We farm using traditional organic farming methods such as crop rotation and cover-cropping, feed our animals Certified Organic grains, and never use harmful or poisonous chemicals or GMOs on our farm, ever.

A Clinical Herbalist, she is a graduate of both the Rocky Mountain Center for Botanical Studies and the Southwest School of Botanical Medicine. Elaine teaches herb classes throughout the western United States and is the founder and co-owner of Meadowsweet Herbs in Missoula, Montana.
