Looks like things are finally moving forward on the new garden space.
How large of a space should we ask for?

Avner
It is looking positive for this but I have some questions from the
Hospital regarding the garden for your group:
1 . what size garden  do you have in mind (it appears that a fair
amount of sod may need to be removed in order to make room for it)?

2 . to whom will the food go to that is grown in this garden?
It would be helpful to have these answers to clarify to the Hospital folks.

Also, these are the stipulations that they have:
1. the vegetable garden will need to be enclosed by an attractive and
sturdy fence (which the hospital would like to approve beforehand) to
prevent animals and pests from invading it.

2. arrangements will need to be made for watering, weeding, and trash
removal within the fence. The Hospital cannot assume responsibility
for costs associated with upkeep.

I am inquiring with the Grounds department about watering. Will you be
able to meet the other stipulations above?

Thanks,
Cindy

Hey Avner,

You need to figure out water first and a shed or place to store tools.

I think you should keep it small and expand later after you have a solid commitment from volunteers to help with upkeep.  You can always build/expand throughout the summer.  I also think that you should construct raised beds like I have in my community garden- maybe not as high but it looks nice, may deter some animals, and definitely cuts down on weeding.

I think you should start with around an 8' x 14' area or 112 cubic feet.

Frame the purpose of the garden as educational purposes/informational more then who gets the veggies, etc.

Best,

Siobhan
