    5Perfect for my lawn

    It's perfect for a quarter acre lawn.

    Having seen reviews on earlier models like LST220, LST300 and LST420, I was worried about the run time. But it did the job.
    It's advertised as 1 hour run time on slow mode, but I'd guess overall combined use would be about 40-45 minutes. I wanted something quiet, light and convenient. LST400 fit the bill. No need to lug around 100 ft cord, no need to get gasoline. Just slide in the battery, and you are good to go.

    At first, I used it on slow speed. For about 20-25 minutes, it did fine cutting dense grass spikes that sprung up like troll-doll hair. Into about 25 minute mark though, it seemed lose a bit of steam. Instead of cutting grass with one sweep, it would leave one corner and chew on it. (It was fully charged the night before.) I had to swing it a couple times to cut 2 inch diameter patch of troll-doll heads.

    Time for high speed. High speed did good for another 20 minutes. I think it was about to lose a bit of steam in high speed as well, but I got done. I trimmed the a foot wide patch on the curve (50 feet long, house side and road side=100 feet). The walkway to front door, another 30 feet, I quickly did both sides twice (120 ft). I've done the drive way (25ft), I've done 45ft long fence inside and out (90ft), and then I walked around chopping down spiky grass that I missed. It seemed to have enough juice to do more, but I don't know if it would have lasted for 10 more minutes or 15 (it seemed silly to stand in my yard with trimmer whirring for no reason as neighbors walk by with their dogs). When tougher summer grass comes up, I'll see if it really lasts 1 hour.

    Total minutes I was in the yard was about 45 minutes, but the trimmer wasn't on full 45 minutes. Since it's electric, I didn't feel the need to keep it running while I walked from here to there. When I found offending green beings, I squeezed the trigger and cut it down.
    Single string vibration did not bother me much (why don't they make a counter balance for these things?). The roller wheel was very convenient. Flip the head 180 degrees and it trims vertically as it rolls along. Mid hand grip can be adjusted with a big wing nut, length is adjustable without tools, and rubber covered trigger grip has a safety thumb switch along with a grip switch.

    Is it strong enough to clear a reed field? Nope. Can you trim for hours? Nope.
    If you have a landscape business, this is definitely not for you.

    But if you are like me, it's light, quiet, and easy to use.

    No need to hurry.
    Slap on some patties on the grill, take LST400 and quickly trim some 30 feet, come back to flip the patties, and repeat as necessary.
    It has no gasoline fume. It's not dead quiet, but it's much quieter than corded electric blower I have.
    It will only annoy people within 10 feet of it. Just take your leisurely time trimming grass where ever your mother-in-law is.
    (although annoyed at the noise, she might think you are being uncharacteristically neat for her sake)
    If your brother-in-law wants to swap his beer with this cool new electric trimmer for a while?
    Take the beer and get back to your grill.
    (shouldn't I get paid for advertising ideas like this? Not only did Black and Decker didn't pay me, but they also got me to pay them and write a positive review on top of it! The nerves! Then again, trimming while people are around is as dumb as trying to make a snow angel in the middle of an ice rink during a NHL game. It could get bloody very fast. Don't do it.)

    5Perfect for Light Edging

    While I lived in San Diego, CA, I owned a Corded B&D Hedgehog trimmer for 7 years and never had a problem. It worked fine for my postage stamp yard. But, we moved to Texas and bought a huge house on a big lot. The corded trimmer didn't well because I needed 200+ feet of extension cord. So, bought a gas trimmer (Cheap Echo). That went bad. So bought another gas trimmer ($300 Husqvarna). That went bad after two years. Paid $100 bucks to get it fixed. Another year it went bad.

    So, after being very impressed with th B&D 20V Hedge Trimmer (LHT2200)I bought last year, I thought I give the $99.00 Weed Trimmer (LST400) a try. Bought it today. Assembly was easy and I popped in the charged up battery from the Hedge Trimmer and went to work. Took some time to figure out the ergonomics of the trimmer, but once I got that down I was pleasantly surprised. I have a 150 foot drive way. Both sides with grass. The battery lasted through that and the 100 feet of sid ewalk out front. Ran it along all my flower beds and along the 100 foot fence beside the driveway and the 150 foot fence out back and it was still going! Nice.

    Can't speak for reliability yet. Will update if I have any problems.

    So gave it 5 Stars. But, as I said above, really is just good for light edging. If you are hacking down a field of elephant grass or taking out a bunch of Ivy, this is not the tool for you!

    I wish more products were designed like this.

    To start, the weed whacker/edger was very easy to set up--I had it together and ready for use within 20-30 minutes. After charging the battery, I was ready to meet weeds head on in battle. The charge time for the single, larger battery is approximately 8 total hours. I noticed there is an LST420 and LST400. The only difference I can see is that the 420 has two smaller batteries that each have half the run time of the single large battery that comes with the 400. This difference is personal preference. The larger battery with the 400 that has a one-hour runtime works well for me. I found the LST 400 to be use to easy and well designed. I have a relatively small yard, but I am able to weed whack the front, back, and both sides in 30-40 minutes without any noticeable difference in power fluctuation. If you have a large yard, waiting between charges to finish the job could be an issue.

    In terms of operation, the weed whacker is lightweight and easy to use. To start, you flip a switch and pull the trigger, and that's it--much easier than a pull-start gas engine. Anyone could use the LST 400, especially considering its lightweight.

    The weed whacker comes with 2 power settings--I have only needed to use power setting 1, which supposedly has a longer run time but with less power. The first power setting takes care of all your average weeds. The edger system can be easily switched to (by pushing a button and rotating the head) and used with the attached wheel.

    All in all, this weed whacker was well-designed and functions efficiently. Just flip the switch, pull the trigger, and the weed whacker is running smoothly and quietly. I have no complaints.
