необходимо получать инструкции по практике Пхова.
Однажды каждый из нас умрёт; в этом мире нет ни одного
человека, которому не придётся умереть. Нет никакой пользы в том,
чтобы быть привязанным к этой жизни, потому что она останется позади.
Как сказано в <<37 практиках Бодхисаттв>>: <<Сознание-путешественник
покинет гостиницу вашего тела>>. Поэтому мы должны спросить сами себя:
<<Действительно ли не имеет значения то, готов ли я к смерти? Или
значение имеет что-то ещё? Зачем мне хотеть получить инструкции по
Пхове?>> Если вы получаете инструкции по Пхове, вы получаете метод
обретения свободы. В теле есть девять отверстий, через которые
сознание может выйти после смерти. Только одно из них ведёт к свободе
- отверстие на темени. Получая инструкции по практике Пховы, мы
обучаемся тому, как вывести наше сознание через макушку головы.
Если мы этого не знаем, то будем метаться вокруг под
воздействием горестей, таких как, ненависть, желание, неведенье,
зависть и тому подобных, и, таких образом, потеряем самостоятельность,
будем подавлены невзгодами. Под воздействием несчастий, сознание
вынуждено будет выйти через одно из восьми нечистых отверстий тела,
что приведёт к рождению в сансаре. Будда сказал: <<Независимость - это
счастье; зависимость - это страдание>>.

Response to a question during the Phowa Retreat at Gar Drolma in
Dayton, Ohio, April 2011, on why it is necessary to receive the Phowa
instructions:
One day each of us will die; there is no one in this world who does
not have to die. There is no benefit in being attached to this
lifetime, because it will be left behind. As it is said in "The Thirty-
Seven Bodhisattva Practices," "Consciousness, the guest, will cast
aside the guest-house of the body." So we can ask ourselves, "Does it
really not matter whether I am prepared for death, or does it matter
somewhat? Why would I want to receive Phowa instructions?" If you
receive Phowa instructions you receive a method to attain freedom. The
body has nine openings through which the consciousness can leave after
death. Only one of them leads to freedom--the opening at the crown.
When we receive Phowa instructions we learn how to transfer our
consciousness through the crown.
If we do not know this, we will be tossed around by afflictions such
as hatred, desire, ignorance, jealousy, etc., and thus we will lack
independence, we will be overpowered by the afflictions. Being
controlled by the afflictions will cause the consciousness to leave
through one of the eight impure openings of the body, which will lead
to birth in samsaric existence. The Buddha said, "Independence is
happiness; dependency is suffering."
