I would argue that everybody dreams young and old. We all have dreams about love, the present, and the future. I believe that our dreams come from the societies in which we live in. In my Western view of the world, I am conditioned to dream about having a successful career, to get married and to raise a family. In addition, I think that Disney has affected my life and the lives of others. Disney culture has and continues to impact people of all ages because of the ways it is engrained in our society. Disney films I think play a role in our development and what we would like to achieve in our lifetimes.
The third picture is of Snow White. This image shows a very stereotypical perspective of marriage and raising a family. As in the film, Snow White takes on a maternal role, it is after she gets married that her life changes. She has four children that are shown in addition, the prince is not helping her.
My inspiration for this blog, came from a Facebook group that I joined a couple of years ago. I am a big lover of anything Disney and this group came to my attention, called Disney Gave Me Unrealistic Expectations About Love. When I joined this group, I did not realize the importance of such an idea. I thought that it was cute and true, but never thought about it critically. This group has an interesting concept because of the value that it holds in society and how Disney films, princesses, princes etc. have taught and impacted people of all ages.
The information section of Disney Gave Me Unrealistic Expectations About Love is also very intriguing because of the way it which the creator has cleverly combined aspects from popular Disney movies it states,
Yesterday was the first time that I was involved in the background preparations of a wedding event and I definitely have a newfound appreciation of weddings. I witnessed lots of love, not just love between the couple but also love from family and friends from the way they contribute tirelessly to the wedding. And that is why the wedding is perfect. Everything just falls in place nicely. It is a dream come true for the couple. I must disclaim that my contributions are much lesser compared to the rest cause I was learning how to do things.
On a side note, for Singapore weddings, there is this wedding gatecrash part where the groom, with the assistance of his groomsmen (aka brothers) would have to go through a series of games prepared by the bridesmaid (aka sisters) before the groom can fetch the bride.
Big thanks to our Kiwi relatives for offering to have a folding/assembling/stapling party on the floor of their AirBnB to help us out the day before the wedding. These little guys were a team effort, for sure!
Our friends, John and Cate, from The Photo Bus (see below) also generously brought along some yard games that we set up in the reception area, including a huge Connect Four and Jenga games. So there were lots of options for fun things to do all evening!
A little DIY street corn bar at the end of the buffet! Guests could choose between either corn-on-the-cob or corn-in-a-cup, and then top it with their choice of chipotle mayo, queso fresco, cilantro, lime wedges, and/or chili pepper. Muy delicioso.
Speaking of dreams come true, a few months before the wedding, I received a surprise email from a longtime reader of the blog who runs a custom party supply store on Etsy called Sprinkle Social. She had heard about our engagement and upcoming wedding, and asked if she might be able to send us some custom napkins as a wedding gift. The second I looked at the link she sent, I totally freaked out.
Ha, so we did! Barclay helped organize a house band to back everyone up. Then we invited a few dozen of our closest musician friends to each pick a song (any song!) that they would like to play or sing. And oh my goodness, it was SO GREAT.
Ok, actually there was one other song request that we made for the live music portion of the evening, and that was for our dear friend Sara Swenson to sing her song, Always and Everywhere, for our first dance.
As a bit of a backstory, Sara was one of the three matchmakers who set Barclay and I up two years ago. She has been a longtime friend of both of ours, and has now turned into one of our greatest sources of encouragement and support in our relationship together. And she also happens to be an incredible songwriter, whose music we both love and admire.
I have LOVED reading all of this and seeing the wonderful pics! You look BEAUTIFUL and I am so very happy for you! What a gorgeous wedding, and even more gorgeous couple. I wish you the best of everything!!! Thanks for sharing with us. :)
The most beautiful, special wedding & reception EVER, including my own. Such thought into who you each are & how to make that into one in a ceremony & reception. I am blown away. Happy Landings & a beautiful life together. I hope one day our paths will cross either in the US or Europe.
It is such fun to read about your wedding and reception! Though I no longer live in KC, I love all things River Market and downtown. So cool to see The Photo Bus and Cory (who officiated my wedding) from Quay Coffee. Congratulation to you guys! It looks like it was beautiful, fun, and focused on the one thing that truly mattered: your marriage. Best wishes to you two in your move!
Oh My Gosh these are the sweetest wedding pictures I have ever seen. Thanks for sharing all the pictures they filled my heart with such joy. The love you two have for each other shined on your faces. I send my best wishes and blessings to the lovely bride and groom.
Variety is the spice of life. I like a little variety when it comes to DJing weddings here in lovely Charleston. My aim as a professional wedding DJ has always been to help couples create their own personal soundtrack for their wedding day. This day (which is the biggest of their lives) should include music solely about them. I met Kate with her mom back in June and they introduced me to a new and quiet place to meet clients over in the Mt Pleasant area. Vintage Coffee Cafe During our initial meeting Kate briefly mentioned that her and Jon would want to hear a tropical house playlist during their cocktail hour after their ceremony at Coleman Hall & Chapel in Mt Pleasant. At the time, I took notes, but it wasn't until I met Jon with Kate in early September at one of our consultations that I learned a little more about tropical house. I've always been a big fan of house music, as Charleston used to have a pretty nice house music scene with some great DJs spinning all sorts of house at various areas around downtown Charleston. I knew there were many different sub-genres of house, I am just glad that Kate & Jon allowed me to get more acquainted with the tropical house genre. These are some of the tracks that got played during their Sunday, October 15, 2017 wedding and some I will be adding into my future cocktail hour playlists and receptions.
You might recognize the titles of some of these songs, but the way that they were remixed made all the difference in the presentation of this style of house music during their cocktail hour. During the cocktail hour, numerous guests were doing Shazam on their phones and trying to identify. Some folks even approached me and I let them know that this particular playlist was all by request from Kate and Jon. A true professional wedding DJ makes a couple's dreams come true and satisifies any and all requests.

"Sexual Healing" (Marvin Gaye) Kygo Mix
This tropical house version of this classic really is very sexy! Take a liste by clicking the link in the song title.
"PYT" John Gibbons Remix
Irish record producer & DJ remixed this classic by Michael Jackson in 2017 and it reached all the way to #12 on dance charts in England.
Wanna Speak With Mike Bills About Being Your Charleston Wedding DJ?
It was a truly beautiful day over at Coleman Hall & Chapel in Mt Pleasant. There's only thing that would have made it better and that is slightly cooler temperatures, but as I write this post a few nights later, fall has finally arrived in Charleston. When you make the playlist about the bride and groom and their likes and dislikes, amazing things happen! I wish Kate and Jon a lifetime of love and happiness. I am looking forward to the next weddings that are coming my way in this fall season. I am also looking forward to another advertisement in Charleston Weddings Magazine. This copy of the magazine should hit stores on or about October 30 and will be available through the second annual Charleston Wedding Week coming up in January and going through Valentines Day. Engagement season is almost here, my new video has been posted to my You Tube Channel, as well as my home page to the website. It's definitely an exciting time. I really love to talk to couples about their musical tastes. I wanted to thank you for finding this blog as you search for one of the most important aspects of your wedding day here in Charleston: The DJ entertainment. Click the link up above to be taken over to my main website so that you can fill out a contact form to tell me a little more about your wedding day. DJ Mike delivered well organized and orchestrated results that made for a great wedding and reception! Couldn't have picked a better DJ to cover our event and truly appreciated his availability to pick up the job and execute in such a short time period. I highly recommend his services, overall great quality.
On December 30th, 2021, we drove down to Los Angeles, California, for a short holiday to celebrate the end of the year. I had no idea that Emeka had already planned a surprise for me. On December 31st, 2021, he took me to Urban Light, a stunning installation of restored street lamps at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. As we walked among the glowing lights, he got down on one knee and popped the question. I was speechless and overjoyed. He had hired photographers to capture the moment and they came out of hiding to congratulate us.
