My hope is that if we get Google Groups for Gantry back really active as it once was that the Gantry team will see the mistake they made in moving to Gitter as far as getting help with Gantry for normal users (not Gantry development team) and encourage people to use this group.  It worked great since Gantry was released but the move to Gitter has been a total disappointment for ordinary users.

I get all of these group threads via email so will always help if I can. Only posted one or two myself but have learned a lot from it and feel it is way better than the fast paced scatter shot chat view of Gitter. It would be nice if Gitter was visually set up in a way that gave the immediacy of chat but the thread nature of this. Not sure how that would look but a nice idea.

Grant,

I am responding via email but I usually respond via browser as I normally remove the quotations which makes for really long responses but email responses always include the quotations. :(

Grant,

Here I am responding from the browser so my signature is NOT attached as well as I have removed all of the quotation which really isn't necessary as it's previously listed in the thread.  Most people use signatures and it's a bit tacky to include your business signature which looks like promotion. :)

I agree… gitter isn’t super helpful.
The e-mail digest is the way to go here.

Brad,

How's it going!  Yea, I can respond via email but I have to 'keep' remembering to delete the signature and thread as I've done on this response.  I don't mind responding this way but if I fail to remove my signature, well, people will have to remember that I'm not promoting my business but my memory isn't as good as it use to be. LOL

I'm in!

I have always received digests by email so I know what's going on, but click through to the group to do any real work.

Total agreement here re Glitter.

Tim,

What is really disturbing is that it appears the functionality for 'new' people to join is fine but they can't POST any threads.  I tested this and confirmed it is an issue.  I've created a post on the RT forums for Andy Miller and, hopefully, this will be restored.

People can still create "issues" as a way of asking questions in order to get help.

OK folks, I have delete my original post (shown below) as I have been in discuss with one of the developers at RT and here is what he recommended:

Matt's message:

To me, Gitter is just more "social" -- it's a nice place to bounce ideas and chat in real time...

I personally never use Gitter... maybe I've popped in there once or twice

But if you have any usability issue, feature issue, error, bug... whatever really... Posting an "Issue" on GitHub is perfectly acceptable/best-practice. Issues can get "tagged" by the devs in a number of ways... such as "feature request" (I post lots of feature requests :)) or "bug" or "needs testing" etc. etc... and whenever I run into an error/bug/something-breaking with Gantry I always search the Issues on GitHub first and will often find my answer straight away.

I'll be the first one to admit that I was very apprehensive myself about posting on GitHub... 'cause lets face it, it's where the nerds hang out and I didn't want to misspeak... but my experience since then has been quite the opposite and I've found it to be a wonderful community full of the knowledge that I need to get my job.

So when I have an issue from now on, I'm going to be using GitHub for Gantry 5 issues:   https://github.com/gantry/gantry5

I will still respond to any emails that I get from this group but I won't be posting any more of my issues here.

Luke

Ok thanks Luke. Will also still try to answer here if I know the answer but will try the Github Gantry one.

Hi, Grant.

I am answering this on my phone and iron took 1 minute and 27 seconds to hold the backspace key to remove all of the quotes. LOL

I feel one reason a lot of us Gantry old-timers haven't been active lately is that we finally became proficient at our craft and rarely encounter any issues that we can't resolve by ourselves.  That is progress.

But, based on my limited activity on Gitter, there are a lot of newcomers to this framework that could benefit from our knowledge. So I will probably just pop on and post when I can help.

However, if I have an issue,  I will be using GitHub.

Luke
