How to use Gantry menu assignments?

I want to give my home page a different layout than all the other pages, basically no sidebar on homepage but I want the sidebar on all other pages.  How do I properly use the gantry template assignment feature?

I duplicated my Gantry template, now it shows up in the list of templates with "Override" next to it.  I then went in the override template and on the Assignments tab I checked the home page menu link, and then under layout I checked the box and made the mainbody area as one space without the sidebar.  But I'm still seeing the sidebar pushing my homepage content over..

How then do I use that to give my home page a layout without the sidebar?

Go into each module that you see on your home page in the sidebar position. and, under Menu Assignments, set the Module Assignment to  "Only  on the pages selected" and uncheck the 'Home' menu link.  If this is the 'only' page you don't want the sidebar shown, you could set the Module Assignment to "On all pages except those selected", use Toggle Selection to uncheck all menu links and then check the 'Home' menu link.  Either way, what you are doing is telling Joomla that you do not want this module to display on the home page. Once all modules are no longer published to the 'Home' menu link, then you should not see any sidebars on your home page.

Hey Luke,

That was it exactly.  I had a "phantom" module that was not showing up on the front end, but by having that sidebar-a position attached to it the layout still shifted over to give it that space.

But, because it wasn't showing up on the home page, I didn't think to look at it's menu assignments.
