Page Load Speed too long Gantry

I recently put together a website and the page load speed is not where it should be.
It's taking 2811 ms to load a 22.7 kb image file.
mod_roksprocket - is the module I'm using to display some of the images.. is it the fact that the mod has to modify the image for display?
The images are already "web" ready as they are from an existing site.
What is it I can do to speed up the page without loosing image quality?
