Almost a year ago, Merge Healthcare (now part of IBM Watson Health) has announced that they will stop selling their diagnostic eFilm workstation immediately and that support will only be provided until June 30, 2022.

With tens of thousands of downloads and licensed users worldwide, eFilm Workstation aims to be one of the easiest-to-use DICOM viewers available. eFilm Workstation is most commonly used as a diagnostic workstation, technologist review station, remote reading terminal, image distribution mechanism and disaster recovery device.

This latest release builds upon the eFilm Workstation 3.0 version to provide users faster image loading and customizable viewing protocols for enhanced workflow. Other improvements made to its visualization, print and CD/DVD features accelerate both access and distribution of images among patients and referring physicians. A free, 30-day trial of eFilm Workstation 3.1 is available for download at www.merge.com.

I was unable to find any Mac downloads on web site (e-mailed sup...@merge.com and currently waiting for a reply/response [probably not until next regular short USA work week], but probably won't get a good answer). For now, I will have to extract these them in Windows XP Pro. SP3. Ugh! ?

With the Merge iConnect Access system, users can just go to a URL on the iPad or other tablet, without having to download any special apps, to access images and related reports away from their imaging workstations. Yet, physicians still can take advantage of the iPad's advanced touch-screen capabilities for image manipulation.

This list includes commercial as well as open source applications. It is not inclusive of all DICOM workstations, so if you know of one that works with dcm4chee, add it to the list!

Desrude cites the ability to quickly check patient positioning as an example of additional mobility. If a radiologist is away from a workstation, he or she can look at it from an iPhone. If the positioning is correct and a rescan is unnecessary, the patient can be sent home immediately rather than waiting for the radiologist to return to the office.

The company has announced a testing partnership for their mobile platform with Massachusetts General Hospital, perhaps to bring forth more features. The eFilm Mobile app is available for download now in the App store. Separately, Merge recently announced a merger with AMICAS, another medical imaging technology vendor for $248m in cash, to form one of the largest providers in that arena.

3. Use the "Create Report" button at the bottom of your worklist to open and submit a new request for your radiologist to read a patient imaging exam. Be careful to use a Patient ID that matches the Patient ID of the patient imaging exam to enable your radiologist to easily find the exam.

4. In the RemedyView worklist, you can see your hospital's cases listed. Highlight any case by clicking on it and you can get an action menu by moving your mouse over the left arrow on right. From here you can view/print the current report for the case or add an addendum to a completed case. Note the "Open Image..." action will not work on cases created manually (created without eFilm).

5. You can see the status of each case by moving your mouse over the icon in the Status column:
- Active: Request is submitted, not yet opened by radiologist.
- Locked: Request is opened by radiologist
- Completed: Report is completed by radiologist
Note: Icons with a tiny "A" (addendum) mean the report has one or more addenda.

Icons in the ST (stat) column:
- Normal priority
- Stat Setup for hospitals using another viewer or workstation (non-eFilm)
