I couldn't fall asleep last night. Rather than diving into another episode of Deadwood (I'm on my third viewing of season three), or another game of MLB 12: The Show on my Vita, I decided to surf Apple's App Store for a new game for my iPhone. I noticed that Infinity Pocket's Flick Home Run, a game that released last November, had crawled into the number four slot for Top 25 Free Games. The reason for its late surge up the charts is a new "power update," which adds five new game modes, 28 achievements, and new fly ball speeds to the mix.

A handful of game modes are offered, but almost all of them are locked from the outset. They can only be opened if your slugger levels up enough, or difficult challenges like reaching round 15 are completed.

Outside of hitting a baseball with a bat, this game doesn't deliver a baseball experience. It's more like that old Hit the Penguin Flash game. Regardless, smashing a mammoth 800-foot home run feels great and proves to be a good reflex test.

Flick Home Run is a game of accuracy and just a little bit of luck. With a single flick, launch baseballs into the blue and watch your score improve as you learn to master the pitches coming out of right field. Check out our helpful hints to take you from the minors to the majors!

Knowing if a ball is going to be heavy and hard to hit or loopy and out of control will help you flick it as far as you can with some level of accuracy. From time to time, you'll have gold multipliers thrown your way. Hit these as far as you can! The distance travelled will be multiplied by the number on the ball and this can mean hundreds of points for one flick.

Touch the sunglasses button to see what kind of ball is coming at you. At each step of the game, you only have three ball previews, so use them wisely. This will come in handy as you move up through more challenging steps because you won't always be faced with regular baseballs.

To keep your life bar at the top of the screen from depleting, hit the ball 100 feet or more. This can be tricky with the balls that behave badly, but the fewer the feet travelled, the faster your game winds down.

To keep alive and keep earning points, 100 feet is the minimum distance to shoot for. Flick with some force and pay close attention to the direction your finger is moving in. If you release you finger too quickly, the ball will drop too soon and your game will be over.

Way out in the outfield, up in the sky are balloons. They hover at angles that are tough to hit unless you master the hard hits. The key to taking them out is to aim for the highest balloon. As your ball descends, it will take out three or four more balloons. If your ball doesn't arc, it will only take out one of the lower balloons.

It's best to choose the one that will help you with your weakest skill. If you're already supremely accurate and hit beyond 100 feet every time (lucky you) then go for the Batting Eye upgrade. Knowing what's coming at you is the best way to rack up points.

The two game modes you will play in are the Minors and the Majors. In order to get into the Majors, you have to master the steps of the Minors. You replay steps until you earn enough points to either move up one step or collect on some upgrades.

In Flick Home Run!, the objective is to swipe across the screen to hit a baseball that is being pitched to you. Depending on the game mode (Minor Challenge, Major Challenge, Moonstar Bonus, Multiplayer, Training, Bunt Master, Total Balls, Faster & Faster, Giant Unit, Moto Cutter, Moonstar Bonus II, or Called Shot) your objective is to either hit the ball as far as possible, land the ball in a specific zone, or hit the ball in an arc that will collide with certain bonus objects on the level. A round ends once the player misses the ball more times than stated. Players face different ball types that will move in unique ways before arriving to the home plate. The objective of the game is to get the score as high as possible.

Flick Home Run! was generally well received by critics, receiving a score of 4 out of 5 stars from Touch Arcade reviewer Troy Woodfield, who stated the game is "a simple concept which is well-executed by Infinity Pocket."[1] Slide to Play reviewer Riordan Frost gave the game a 3 out of 4, suggesting that "the gameplay is fun enough that even non-sports fans will probably get a kick out of Flick Home Run."[2]

It's high. It's far. It's Outta Here! Home runs, baseball's most exciting aspect, now fit right in your pocket. Developed By Infinity Pocket for iPhone and Android, Flick Home Run is attempting to steal baseball fan's hearts.

The game is simple to understand. After all, the instructions are in the title. With the flick of the finger you send the ball sailing hundreds of feet. As long as the ball goes past the dotted line, it counts as a hit. There are cool levels and a variety of different baseballs.

Once you get used to the flicking motion of hitting the ball, rather than a typical swipe or pull back motion, it's easy to play this app. But it's hard to tell what's required to "level up" or how exactly you get "out," which might be frustrating for some kids who want to know the rules or have them so straightforward as to be obvious.

Parents need to know that Flick Home Run ! is a simple baseball batting simulation game that could end up costing you more than you think if your kid makes in-app purchases, ranging from $.99 to $9.99, in order to "level up." The basic play of the game -- touching the "Pitch" icon and using your finger to flick the ball like a bat when the ball comes onto the screen in various pitching styles -- is simple. And the backgrounds and graphics are cute; for example, the balls change "costumes" and "faces" including wearing a snorkel mask and becoming a fireball. But the game isn't really ideal for younger kids because it has a lot of different modes and levels and the option for in-app purchases just to play at increasing levels. Users can share high scores via the Game Center social network, but participation is optional.

For FLICK HOME RUN ! to be fun, kids have to be old enough to understand and follow their family's rules about in-app purchases and Game Center participation. With cute graphics and an easy way to turn your finger into a baseball bat simulator, it seems like this could be a fun, mindless pastime for any baseball fan of almost any age. But the in-app purchase required at some points to "level up" means this app could end up costing you more than you bargained for. In addition, the parameters around what causes a strike and what sort of motion decides how far a ball goes aren't intuitive, so unless you're old enough and motivated enough to read the long "Help" primer, you or your kid won't know exactly what went wrong (or right) with the swings much of the time.

The control system in Homerun Battle 2 is excellent: tilt your iPhone or iPad to adjust where you will swing in the strike zone. When the pitch crosses the plate, touch the screen anywhere to swing. It takes some practice to be able to line up your bat with different types of pitches, but you get the hang of it fairly quickly. The challenge is in hitting several home runs in a row, which you'll need to practice if you plan on trying your luck against other skilled players online. The system for online matching with other players is superb, letting you start playing almost immediately.

To add to the challenge the field is divided up into zones -- left field, center field, and right field -- and once you've hit a ball out of the park in all three, you go into a sort of called-shot mode. The game randomly selects a zone, and your job is to successfully hit a home run in that zone on the next pitch for bonus points. The longer you can keep a streak going, the more points you'll get, but if you miss one, you'll have to start over from the beginning. Homerun Battle has several extra bonuses to shake up the home-run gameplay mechanic, such as hitting the foul poles, hitting the Jumbotron, and other challenges that all add to your score.

Flick Home Run (99 cents) for iPhone or Android is an arcade home-run-hitting game that only requires a flick of your finger to send the ball over the fence, but it definitely takes practice. A recent update includes several new game modes to add to the fun.

Unlike 3D home-run games like Homerun Battle 2, in Flick Home Run you have a 2D view of the playing field, with pitches coming from the right and you timing your flick to send the ball as far as you can. The game instructs you to touch a Pitch button in the lower left corner, and when the ball comes into play, your job is flick the ball at just the right angle to send it on its way.

The basic game mechanic is easy to learn, but difficult to master, as there are other arcade elements in Flick Home Run. Beyond trying to get the perfect angle for a hit, you'll also have different colored cartoonish heads (baseballs) that all behave differently. One acts as a fastball and another tests your timing with a changeup. As you progress, there are other baseballs that do even more outlandish dips and curves. The key is identifying the ball type and adjusting your swing accordingly. The game gives you some help here with a button that lets you know what kind of ball is coming, but you can only use it three times per game. All of this amounts to plenty of variation in gameplay and a lot of different pitches to master.

Flick Home Run has several unlockable levels that you can open by completing challenges and hitting efficiently. A meter slowly goes down with each missed hit, while big hits will bring the meter back up. If the meter goes all the way down your game is over. This mechanic adds to the fun because you'll find yourself trying to get big hits just to stay in the game.

A recent update to Flick Home Run brings several new game modes to breathe new life into this already great game. A new bunt mode challenges you to land a ball on a target perfectly for the most points. Faster and Faster mode slowly increases speed to see how far you can get. The new game modes add more challenge and replayability to this easy-to-pick-up-and-play game.
