Installation with the zip version is very simple as long as you know how to work with zip files and can manage general file and directory handling in Windows. Basically you just extract (unzip) the downloaded file to a folder on your disk, e.g. "C:\Program Files\FileZilla FTP Client\" and then just start FileZilla with the filezilla.exe file afterwards. Please note that this action requires Elevation on Windows Vista/7/8! It might be a good idea to make a shortcut to this file on your desktop/start menu/quick launch so that you can easily access it.
When you start FileZilla in the Finder, then you will see that the window of FileZilla is covered by the top menu. You may find it difficult to move the window, because you cannot click on the covered top of the FileZilla-window. Tip: You can resolve this problem by changing the resolution of your screen and then change it back to the original resolution (during the resolution change, OSX re-checks that all windows are properly oriented).
If you're using GNU/Linux, you can also try using the precompiled binaries. After extracting the files to any location (location does not matter, FileZilla can detect its own installation prefix), you can start the program using the filezilla executable in the bin/ subdirectory. Please note that due to differences in distributions, the provided binaries might not work on your system.
You should now be connected to the cluster and see your local files in the left-hand pane and the remote files in the right-hand pane. You can drag and drop between them or drag and drop to/from file windows on your computer. When done, click the red X icon up top to disconnect.
I searched a lot, and I found FileZilla. It is a very nice free software, perfect logs, comprehensive permission sets, etc. However, the problem is the user-interface of FileZilla Client, which is not so friendly. For example, when a client wants to open several images and see them, he/she has to open them one by one, compared to windows homegroup, where one can use windows photo viewer and open one image in a folder, and it automatically switches to the next.
I configured FTP Service/Role on my Windows Server 2008 R2 machine. I am able to connect from the inside, but not from the outside. On the inside I tested using cmd prompt and IE FTP. On the outside, I am testing with FileZilla and IE FTP. From the outside, IE FTP prompts me to enter my username/pwd, but nothing happens. Page eventually times out and I get "Internet Explorer cannot display page". Using FileZilla, I get the following messages. Note FileZilla resolved domain name and authenticates. I did not configure FTP Wirewall Support on the FTP site. I am not sure if I need to do this. I set up basic authentication, non-ssl, not allowing anonymous. I testing with Windows Firewall Turned off and on (I added windows firewall rule for port 21). On my network firewall (Cisco), I added a rule to forward port 21 traffic to FTP Server.
I downloaded the new version (3.21.0) from filezilla-project.org's sourceforge link. It was a gzip file that contained a directory called "Filezilla 3" that contained a "bin" and "share" directory. I extracted them inside my downloads directory, opened thunar as root with pkexec thunar copied /bin & /share then pasted them into /usr, accepting any overwrite requests.
Once connected to the Droplet, use the Local site windows to navigate the directories of your local machine and locate the files you want to upload. Right-click the file you want to transfer to the Droplet, then click Upload.
To transfer files from the Droplet to your local machine, use the Remote site windows to navigate the directories of your Droplet and locate the files you want to download to your local machine. Right-click the file you want to transfer from the Droplet, then click Download.
