Subject: A Tale of Two Cities
Allies,
Today we’re mobilizing at City Hall for a final Planning and Land Use Management (PLUM) vote on key provisions affecting the garment industry in Downtown LA as part of the DTLA 2040 Community Plan update.
At a CD14 Candidate Forum last week, Councilmember Kevin de Leon — in a concerning response to a question about the downtown garment district — emphasized garment production abroad. This, despite the reality of tens of thousands of garment workers making apparel in Los Angeles. He further glossed over the needs of the downtown garment industry and workforce by discussing surrounding neighborhoods, rather than acknowledging the demands of stakeholders in the industry for this area.
Garment workers, local small business producers and designers are asking for an actual balance of affordable housing production and preservation of local working class jobs, not a phony claim of balance while giving developers the keys to the city.
We have a choice of which future of Downtown LA and the garment industry we want to see.
One is a city that continues the trend of pushing poor people out of their communities.
An alternative is a city that actually includes the voices of immigrants, low income workers, and ethical businesses.
Today we’re asking for community supporters to call Kevin De Leon’s office and ask that he support our recommendations for requiring job productive uses in new construction and preserving loading bays and freight elevators needed in garment manufacturing in the Fashion District.
And if you can, please sign on to this letter of support by TUESDAY, OCTOBER 15th 12pm.
Also, please join us in person at the PLUM committee hearing later today (Tuesday, October 15th at 2pm @ city hall.) We will be showing up with garment workers to ensure our advocacy for the past two years is honored! Please wear red.
